This is my first Non-ebony bass. Nut and saddle are sonowood- a compressed and heat treated walnut. The endpin is delrin-a hard plastic alternative. The fingerboard is Gaiatone- a compressed recycled material bounded by an eco-resin. The tailpiece is a dyed hardwood. Many of these alternatives are available from Vermont Violins and The Burlington Violin Shop website. My next violin will have a sonowood- fingerboard, tailpiece and nut. It is so exciting to have sustainable, legally sourced and reliable materials in our industry. Check them out.

My 2022-2023 3/4 Piattallini(right) Italian inspired bass return this week for an open seam and a fingerboard cleaning. It's so curvy next to the recent John Lott English model I just finished. Both basses are sporting Thomastik-Infeld strings: cushiony Belcanto on the italian and growly Spirocore on the English.

What's your style?

Little update: I haven't been building and repairing full time since February 2024 when I started working full time for a music company based out of NY supplying violin and guitar shops with instruments, strings and accessories. I am not taking on long restoration projects or new commissions. I will continue to build basses when time and life allows but these models will be based on instruments I am inspired to make. The best form of communication is via email at [email protected]. The shop no longer has a phone line.

Thank you for understanding that our lives change, and supporting the Moehring family in whatever we do.

A little closer every week. Color coats are done on my bass no. 12. Now to begin shading the varnish to create subtle wear in heavy use areas similar to where the original 1835 John Lott Sr. Bass is worn. I'm really excited to hear this bass. Stay tuned and happy St. Patrick's Day friends.

The shop is not currently accepting new work. I have continued to recommend a few wonderful shops for your violin, viola, cello, bass repair and service needs:
Caraway Strings : Richardson, TX (DFW)
Lisle Violin Shop : Houston area
Cadenza violins: Shreveport, LA
Sola Violins : Lafayette, LA

My recommendation for high quality double bass repair including the best C extensions around is Joey Naeger Basses in Katy, TX.

I hope this helps!

Soaking up some morning sun rays on this line top. I'm happy with the tone of the sycamore. My goal is to get all the wood components tan to match as close as possible before sealing it all up. Getting close!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to help clean and sort the workshop of a local woodworker. He was a highly skilled carver and wood turner. I enjoyed visiting with his widow along with my friend and fellow woodworker John. After sorting through and giving advice about how to sell many of his life's works tools, she allowed us to purchase anything we found useful. I couldn't leave without this:

I don't know much about it. I gather it's likely German, all wooden parts except for one 1.5" bolt holding parts of the vice together. It's mostly made from a lovely Birdseye maple with a bit of pine or spruce in places. The whole thing is knock down, I was able to disable it carefully and move it by myself. The joinery alone is an art form. I'm looking forward to many many years of building on this bench. Thank you Tom, I'll carry it on.

Bass #9 came to visit for Christmas break. She was in for a little spa day and a soundpost recut. I really loved this build. I was given so much creative room with this client to make the bass I wanted to make. They requested the mahogany flat back and left the rest up to me. Since completion we have also added these turquoise inlays. Seeing this bass again has given me motivation the finish my current build. I may have to make another mahogany bass after this build.

I love this step. Ribs are out of the mold. Bass bar shaped. All bracings are ready for trimming while I clean up the inside and get the box ready to close. This has been a really fun build. All my planning before starting the build has really paid off.
Pictured is the pine top, sycamore flat back with Bresque Basses Responsive bracing, and the rib structure for my John Lott Sr. Model.

Wow, this is worth sharing! Shannon with The Studio Kilgore explains the importance of purchasing a proper instrument and why "online specials" are literally a waste of money.

I would not still be making basses if I didn't have a community of close bass maker friends and colleagues such as . I wish other instrument maker groups could come together and learn together like we all do without seeing each other like competitors. Thanks for keeping my Northern basses safe and always being a phone call away buddy.
