in History: The US Army Occupation of Germany came to an end.

Until 5 May 1955, the US Army continued to provide the occupation force of post-war Germany. During this period, the bulk of the Army was involved with the occupation of both German and Japan. The policies in each area were different. The Allies had hammered out a common occupation policy at the Yalta and Potsdam confederate in 1945 whereby Germany was separated into zones occupied by American, British, Soviet, and French forces.

Of those forces, was the United States Constabulary that existed from 1946 until 1952. The Constabulary units were formed in 1946 by drawing veteran units from the 1st and 4th Armored Divisions and several separate Cavalry outfits then on occupation duty in Germany. The Constabulary units were given a distinctive uniform: helmet liners with triple stripes of yellow-blue-yellow, shoulder patches with the “thunderbolt” insignia, and yellow nylon scarves. Their jeeps, tanks, and other vehicles were also marked with the distinctive stripes which earned them the nickname of “Kartoffelkafer,” or “potato bug”, from German villagers.

These heavily-armed and colorfully uniformed troopers immediately caught the attention of the German populace. Their motto was “Mobility, Vigilance, and Justice,” and its troopers were hand-picked, trained to handle both civilians and soldiers under any situation that should arise. The entire force was trained to be helpful and kind whenever possible, but always firm in the discharge of their duties.
Today, visitors to the West Point Museum can tour the History of the US Army Gallery to learn more about the post-war occupations of Germany and Japan.
