We are sad to announce that historian Malcom Lee Johnson passed away August 1, 2025 in Kerrville Texas at the age of 85 years.
Texas has lost an amazing historian.
He lived a wonderful life doing what he enjoyed most - researching Texas history, Texas Navy, WW2 history, early American history, rockhounds & archeology, mountain man rendezvous, Pow-Wows, reenactments at historical sites and at Texas schools ... and more!
His wife Ann Johnson will continue on his Texian Trade'n Post business, with the inventories of his Republic of Texas Navy, Army, Marine uniform buttons, and other items.

If you need to get in touch with Ann, with questions on any items, it would be best to call & leave a message with your name, phone #, and which items your interested in. Please understand that it could take a few days for a response.

San Elizario traces its origins back to April 1598, when Spanish explorer Juan de Oñate and his caravan stopped along the banks of the Rio Grande to give thanks. By 1789, the Spanish military had moved its presidio, created to defend settlers and travelers from Apache raids, to the current San Elizario.

Over the following decades, the settlement grew into a prominent agricultural and military community. It served as a vital stop along the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro and later became the original county seat of El Paso County.

The town’s strategic location drew merchants, stagecoach lines, and new residents, but also led to conflicts over resources and political control. These tensions erupted in the violent Salt War of 1877, when local Mexican-origin residents clashed with outside interests over access to the nearby salt lakes.

Despite the arrival of the railroad in El Paso, bypassing San Elizario, the town retained its rural character. Today, its historic adobe buildings, irrigation canals tracing the routes of original acequias, and enduring farming traditions reflect a community deeply rooted in its layered past.

This deep connection to its rural past makes San Elizario a great host for the Smithsonian ’s traveling exhibition, "Crossroads: Change in Rural America." The exhibit highlights San Elizario’s journey through centuries of change and invites reflection on the broader challenges and adaptations rural America faces.

The “Crossroads” exhibit will be on display at Los Portales Museum and Information Center from May 3 through June 15. Celebrate the official opening this Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. with local speakers, folklórico and Tigua dancers, and tours.
