Out of the ashes we rise, we rise! Out of the ashes we rise! I am so excited to announce that Storytime Bookshop has a new location!! We've just started moving in to the old Impact Community space at 220 W Kennewick Ave and it's already shaping up to be better than ever! We lost all of our book inventory and soft goods, most of our furniture and big portion of our sanity in the fire and what has come after. We are SO grateful for our community that has shown up for us in ways we couldn't even imagine. We'll tell whole story soon, but in the meantime we're looking for book, furniture, and monetary donations to help us get up and running as soon as possible. Our goal is have the front area open with kids, middle reader and YA/teen books by mid-June and bringing on other sections as we can. There is so much more to come, so please make sure you're following along as we create new life from old ashes. Press release link in bio. Big thanks to Tri-Cities Toddler for helping us make this announcement!!!

We weren't sure if we were going to make it to Independent Book Store Day, but Storytime Bookshop is officially set as a pop-up at Discount Vac and Sew tomorrow from 12-3. There is a limited amount of books available for sale, summer camp sign ups are open, and there will be story times at 12:30 and 1:30. There will also be a golden ticket from Libro.fm hidden somewhere and the winner will get a 12-credit audio book bundle! We are so appreciative of the community that continues to rally around us and are so grateful and thankful for the support that we've received. So much more to come and hope to see you tomorrow!

Three weeks ago, a fire in El Tequilas Restaurant caused smoke damage to the interior of our store and has since flooded three times to due to roof damage. The good news is that we have had a huge hand up in starting to rebuild as a quickly as possible, the bad news is that we've lost almost everything. None of the inventory can be saved and some of the furniture will need to be replaced. Fortunately, we will be reopening as a pop up at Discount Vac and Sew very soon! We'll have cute corner in the front of the store and are committed to carrying as many kinds of books as possible while continuing to focus on books for young minds and literacy-based classes and story times as we can. Right now, we're focused on clearing out garbage and furniture. We can definitely use a couple of strong folks to help with carrying out some of the bigger stuff; please message if you can help! If you'd like to donate books or money, we'd happy and grateful to receive those as well! We're making the sweetest lemonade from this bad batch of lemons and are so grateful to this community for showing us such a wonderful outpouring of love.

Mary Burrill, 1881-1946
By: Shay Dawson, NWHM Predoctoral Fellow in Gender Studies l 2022-2024

Mary P. Burrill was a celebrated playwright whose works inspired many prominent writers of the New Negro Movement/Harlem Renaissance. She used her plays to confront many topics, including, but not limited to, lynching, the Black experience, and bodily autonomy for women.

Through her plays and her work as an educator, Burrill taught various writers whose writings were integral to the New Negro Movement/Harlem Renaissance. Centered in the early 1910s and lasted until the late 1930s, historians describe this period as “...the development of the Harlem neighborhood in New York City as a Black cultural mecca… and the subsequent social and artistic explosion that resulted…manifesting in literature, music, stage performance, and art” (History 2009).

By Arlisha R. Norwood, NWHM Fellow (2017) | Revised by Corina Gonzalez, 2024-2026 Evelyn Y. Davis Predoctoral Research Fellow in Women's Studies (2025)

In 1862, Ida B. Wells-Barnett was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi. She was born into slavery and later emancipated with her parents at the conclusion of the Civil War.

Wells-Barnett was a journalist, anti-lynching activist, women’s suffragist, and early civil rights movement leader.

Wells-Barnett authored A Red Record, a book that provided the history and statistical data on the lynching of African Americans in the United States during the late nineteenth century.

n March 15, 1931, Ida B. Wells-Barnett died from kidney disease. A respected leader in Chicago’s Black community, she left behind a legacy that was not fully recognized until the publication of her autobiography in 1970. Although she did not live to witness the Civil Rights Movement, her anti-lynching activism and journalism laid the foundation for its radical spirit, reflecting the power of collective action in the Black community.
