Alaska Sea Glass

Alaska Sea Glass Saving Alaska one necklace at a time. Alaska Sea Glass was created to solve the glass waste problem And thus, Alaska Sea Glass was born!

During a vacation in Hawaii, high school freshman Jenna Hansen noticed parking lots filled with beautiful tumbled glass as filler instead of pebbles. This discovery sparked a train of thought that led her to entering an environmental contest at home in Alaska. Both Alaska and Hawaii share some similarities when it comes to recycling. It is not cost effective to recycle locally and too expensive to

ship out to the ‘Lower 48.’

It really bothered Jenna that we had such a beautiful resource just sitting in a mountain in our landfill. Many have asked how we make the sea glass. The glass is ‘rescued’ from the landfill and transfer stations. Even our friends are involved and drop off some of the more unique colors that they save us. After we get the glass, it is washed and labels scraped off. Then it’s put in a cement mixer with BIG rocks to break the glass. The final step is to collect in 5 gal buckets the silty water from the Cook Inlet. The water is used in an industrial sized tumbler that Jenna purchased with the money she won in the environmental contest. What started as just a school project has blossomed into a family business. Jenna, her mother, her two sisters, and many friends have all banded together to make this business possible. Not only does it give us a creative outlet and fun memories, Alaska Sea Glass also helps to keep our community clean and saves our beautiful state from more landfills.
