Before weather apps, push notifications, and smartphones, NOAA Weather Alert Radios helped families stay informed when it mattered most.

These radios have a history tied to aviation, marine safety, tornado warnings, and emergency preparedness — but they can still be useful today. Unlike phones, a weather alert radio can stay on standby, sound an alarm during severe weather, and keep working with battery backup during power outages.

It’s a simple reminder that some older technology still has a purpose: reliable, direct alerts when modern systems may be down, delayed, or out of reach.
A great practical find for a home, office, garage, shop, or storm-prep kit.

Shop on our website https://www.troost39.org/ or stop by T39 and check it out while it’s still here!

Looking for a way to cool down this summer with a little vintage character?

We have two great conversation pieces in the shop: a vintage Emerson Electric fan and a vintage hassock floor fan.

The Emerson fan is especially fun for history lovers. Emerson Electric was founded in St. Louis in 1890 and became known for durable motors and household electric fans that were built to last. The heavy metal design, wire cage, and classic blades make it the kind of piece that feels both useful and collectible.

The hassock floor fan has its own charm too. These fans were designed to sit low to the ground and move air through a room, often blending into the home more like furniture than a modern appliance. They were practical, sturdy, and made for real summer use.

Whether you love vintage décor, collect old appliances, or just want something unique to help keep the air moving, these are worth seeing in person. Stop by Troost39 and check them out before the summer heat really kicks in.

May is AANHPI [Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander] Heritage Month, and a great time for us to give a shout out to two of our co-founders, Ben and Jo Babaran. The Babarans hail from the Philippines and that heritage informs their work and ministry at Troost39. Says Ben, "I carry my Asian heritage wherever I go - I try not to lose it, and I consciously try to make sure that heritage is part of what we share in whatever community we are in."

For Jo, food is one way that people express their heritage, and Ben and Jo both supply our T39 Staff celebrations with plenty of delicious Philippine cooking. While food is an all-important signifier, Jo stresses: "Our background is Asian, but we are now part of this American culture."

In terms of their engagement with staff and customers, Ben puts it this way: "Asians are very family-oriented, and in the nine years we have operated as Troost39, we feel we have built a family here." Adds Jo, "Most of our customers feel that way. Our customers are intergenerational - family members from different generations of the same family come to shop with us."

We salute Ben and Jo for their loving, Asian-style family approach to making Troost39 a "Beloved Community," and for generously sharing their heritage with us.

Some gifts are more than donations — they carry love, memory, and community.

Karen stopped by T39 with eggs and donuts in honor of her son, Brandon, whose life she continues to remember and celebrate.

Moments like this are a reminder that Troost39 is more than a thrift store. It is a place where neighbors show up for each other, stories are shared, and kindness keeps moving through the community.

Every donation matters — whether it is clothing, food, household items, time, or simply a kind gesture. It helps T39 continue serving local families and creating a space where people feel seen, welcomed, and supported.

Thank you, Karen, for sharing Brandon’s memory with us in such a thoughtful way. 🤍

A piece of vintage American picnic history is available now at Troost39 ✨

This collectible Wov-N-Wood by Jerywil picnic basket is more than just a beautiful vintage find— it reflects a major shift in American life.

Before the 1940s, picnicking was often seen as a more formal, upper-class outing inspired by Victorian-era English traditions. But after WWII, as highways expanded and suburban living grew, road trips became more accessible to middle-class families. Wov-N-Wood baskets were mass-marketed for this new generation of car-owning families heading to state parks, roadside stops, and weekend getaways.

With its wooden splint weave, bent-wood handles, hinged lids, and rustic charm, this basket is perfect for vintage collectors, farmhouse decor lovers, resellers, or anyone who loves owning a piece of everyday American history.

Stop by Troost39 and see it in person before it is gone.

The saying “They don’t make ‘em like they used to” has never been truer than in the case of this old treadle sewing machine. 🥹🪡 This lovely old machine with its oak cabinet, used in the late 1800’s, was foot-powered, and operated without electricity, using a pedal, belt and flywheel system to drive the needle. These durable, often cast-iron machines offer exceptional, quiet and precise control for straight stitching, making them popular for off-grid sewing, historical re-enactors, and vintage enthusiasts.

We tried it, and it’s a dream to pedal even today! Thrift this beauty this week❤️
