Thanks to everyone who came out for another round of Strawberry Hill Singinโ€™ Book Club tonight, and especially to everyone who shared their poems, songs, essays, and history projects responding to Wendell Berryโ€™s novel ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฉ ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ. It was fantastic, as always. Weโ€™ll meet again on July 10 to hear more creative pieces inspired by ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜‰๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฌ by Tove Jansson. Copies are available at Flagship if you want to get started reading & writing.

Two weeks from today, weโ€™re looking forward to welcoming Dr. Tai Edwards, to hear about the new book that she co-edited, ๐‘ณ๐’š๐’…

The book is about a fascinating piece of history that happened just a few blocks from where Flagship now sits. In 1907, Lyda Conley, along with her sisters Ida and Helena who were all members of the Wyandot Nation, fought to protect the cemetery where their parents and many other relatives are buried. When a developer wanted to buy the land the cemetery was on and dig up everyone buried there, Lyda and her sisters built a small shack in the cemetery and guarded it with shotguns day and night for several years. Meanwhile, Lyda - who had attended law school by rowing across the river every day - was working to change the legal status of the cemetery, and ended up being the first Native American to ever argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The sistersโ€™ work paid off: the cemetery was saved, and theyโ€™re now buried there too along with their family members. You can visit their graves in Huron Indian Cemetery at the corner of 7th & Minnesota in KCK.

The new book is a collection of new essays, oral histories, and primary source documents related to the Conley sisters and Huron Indian Cemetery. Come get your copy on June 11, and hear more from Dr. Edwards about this vital piece of Kansas history.

Yesterday, for the fifth year in a row, Flagship was one of the venues for Manor Fest, and we got to hear great sets from Nina Cherry & the Pitts, Dandelion Lakewood & the Bowl of Dust, and The Matchsellers. Shaun told us that being involved for five years makes Flagship the longest-running Manor Fest venue, which was a cool surprise, since itโ€™s easy to still feel like newcomers to the KC community and cultural scene. Weโ€™re proud to be part of it.

Thanks to all the bands for playing, to Shaun and everyone else at Manor Records for organizing the fest, and to everyone else who came out to support local music. Manor Fest continues tonight in West Bottoms and Saturday in the Crossroads.

The next Strawberry Hill Singinโ€™ Book Club is coming up soon, and this time our book is ๐‘ฏ๐’‚๐’๐’๐’‚๐’‰ ๐‘ช๐’๐’–๐’๐’•๐’†๐’“ by Wendell Berry. Itโ€™s a quiet, reflective, character-driven novel with lovely writing, so if you require lots of action and an exciting plot in your books, this one might not be for you.

But if the perennial themes of memory, loss, love, community, and human connection to the land inspire you to write a song or poem, we hope youโ€™ll share it with us on May 30. You can sign up at this link: https://forms.gle/2ELsY58THF3rFimTA

If youโ€™d rather just show up and hear what other people have written, youโ€™re welcome to do that too. Bring a snack or beverage to share if you feel like it.

Weโ€™ve got copies of ๐‘ฏ๐’‚๐’๐’๐’‚๐’‰ ๐‘ช๐’๐’–๐’๐’•๐’†๐’“ available to purchase at Flagship, and itโ€™s also on Libro.fm if you prefer audio books. See you on the 30th!
