Happy birthday to all the June babies! If you were born in June, you are lucky enough to have 3 birthstones to choose between: pearl, alexandrite and moonstone! Pictures is a collection of notable gems of the three, decorated as sweets.

We have a beautiful set of cultured white freshwater pearls and natural diamonds in stock, as well as a beautiful set of alexandrite.

Pearls: This enchanting June birthstone originates from oceans, lakes and rivers around the world. It is a timeless wardrobe staple, beloved by women of all ages. The origin of pearls fascinated our forebears. Ancients from the Middle East believed that pearls were teardrops fallen from heaven. The Chinese fancied that the June birthstone came from the brain of a dragon. Christopher Columbus and his contemporaries thought that mollusks formed pearls from dew drops.

Alexandrite: the rare variety of the mineral chrysoberyl that changes color in different lighting. Most prized are those alexandrite birthstones that show a vivid green to bluish green in daylight or fluorescent light, and an intense red to purplish red in incandescent light. Major alexandrite deposits were first discovered in 1830 in Russia’s Ural Mountains. The gem was named after the young Alexander II (1818–1881), heir apparent to the throne. Alexandrite caught the country’s attention because its red and green colors mirrored the national military colors of imperial Russia.

Moonstone: the best-known gem of the feldspar group of minerals. It is renowned for its adularescence, the light that appears to billow across a gemstone, giving it a special glow. The finest moonstones show a blue sheen against a colorless background. This June birthstone has been associated with both the Roman and Greek lunar deities. Hindu mythology claims that it is made of solidified moonbeams. Moonstone is often associated with love, passion and fertility; it is believed to bring great luck.

Ruby is the July birthstone – and it’s one of the most popular gems. The name is derived from the Latin word for red, signifying the color of love and passion. The finest color of the birthstone for July is a deep red with a hint of purple, called “pigeon’s blood.” A variety of the mineral corundum (same as sapphires), ruby sets its color from trace amounts of the element chromium. The more chromium, the stronger the red.

Earlier this summer we had the amazing opportunity to participate in styled photoshoot with some amazing vendors from around the Flathead. It was a wonderful opportunity to display a more non-traditional center stone in a wedding ring. Sapphires, Emeralds and Rubies are becoming more popular for wedding rings and we have been designing quite a few with a non-diamond center stone. Feel free to swing by and check out our selection if you are interested!

The two rings: Natural emerald and diamond ring set in 14K white gold. The men's ring is a Serinium Band with sterling silver inlay.

PSA about today's silver ad in the newspaper. We have had people asking and wanted to say that these types of ads are designed to be tricky and make you feel like you are ordering a lot of special silver that they just found in a hidden vault that the government is now releasing. Nothing is further from the truth and the prices they are charging are absurd. Almost every week we see, often elderly folks, fall for these types of ads that make it seem like the silver is special when it is really just produced by some mint that is charging double what a regular bullion shop would.

These "sealed vault bags" have nothing to do with the U.S. government (if you read the small text at the bottom). The pictures make the bars look like 10 oz bars, when in fact they are only a half an ounce of silver (really small bars). Spot on silver closed at $26.79 on Friday, meaning that if you came into our store we would sell you a single half ounce of silver for $16.39. If you want a single bar from them, they are charging $50.00 (or $100 per ounce)! They only to come down to $29 ($58 per ounce) if you order a bag. Their "Jumbo Silver Ballistic Bag full of 100 1/2 ounce bars, or 50 ounces of silver would cost you $2,900. 50 ounces if you came into our store would be $1489.50 as of Friday.

Long story short, these really small bars (probably about an inch in length, much smaller than the photo in the paper) have horrible prices, are not special, and are designed to get people that don't know a lot about silver, or elderly folks, to buy their product. We aren't saying this as a way to get you into our shop, any bullion shop in Montana likely has far better prices. Just be sure that you don't get stuck buying these bars on a newspaper or TV ad.

Please share with anyone susceptible to buying silver off the newspaper ad or TV commercial. They are never a good deal and always feel free to contact us if you have questions.

Happy Birthday to all the July babies, with a beautiful birth stone of Ruby. A ruby is actually the same gemstone as sapphire, and in fact there are Montana rubies! Ruby is one of the traditional cardinal gems, together with amethyst, sapphire, emerald, and diamond. The word ruby comes from ruber, literally meaning red in Latin.
