Sunday Surprise Hours!

Today, Sunday, June 7th, we’ll be open from 1:30–5:30 PM.

With our move coming up, every book that finds a new home today is one less book we have to move later. If you’re out and about this afternoon, stop by, browse the shelves, and help us lighten the load.

We’d love to see you!

Favorite Memory #9:

One of our favorite memories was helping celebrate the creation and launch of Generator Five, the first anthology from the Atascosa Writers Group.

Our local writers met, wrote, encouraged each other, and turned their stories into a real book. Getting to celebrate that accomplishment here at the bookstore was something special. We had a great day signing books and connecting with the community in a way I believe only a bookstore can.

With only rare exceptions, the Atascosa Writers Group meets every Tuesday at 5:30 PM to support, challenge, and help one another become better writers.

More group projects are already in the works, and we’ll be announcing them very soon.

Favorite Memory #8:

Hosting a plushie sleepover is one of our favorite things we did in 2024.

A few local children brought their favorite plushies in for story time with Ms. Wendy. Then they entrusted us with their cuddly toys, and it was our job to make sure they had a fun overnight adventure.

Those snuggly characters spent the night all over the store, playing, reading, exploring, and watching, what else, Toy Story.

The next morning, the kids came back to pick up their toys and see pictures of the wonderful evening their plushies had together.

It was simple. It was fun. And it was just about the cutest thing ever.

We hope you’ll visit us for food, fun, and community on Saturday, June 13.

Favorite Memory #7:

One of the most rewarding things we get to do as a bookstore is highlight local authors and local talent.

Irma Sanchez and Gary Moseley spent a day with us signing their books and sharing their stories. We also had the joy of celebrating the actors from the audio play created by local writer, director, and producer Charlie Delgado.

Those are the moments that remind us why Fairy Tale Books was never meant to be just shelves and a cash register. It was meant to be a place where local stories could be seen, heard, and celebrated.

And then there was the day our sign was hoisted onto the building and lit up for the first time.

That felt like raising a trophy over our heads and shouting, “Look here! This is something special.” It is something we're very proud to share with you.

Favorite Memory #6:

In February 2024, we hosted a local author’s book signing with Adrian Delgado, Jeff Bray, and Martin Gonzalez of the Atascosa County Historical Commission. We recorded interviews with authors, organized our first D&D game, and recorded an original audio play, The Mortal Proposition, written and performed by local talent.

That month helped set the tone for what we wanted Fairy Tale Books to become. We never wanted to be simply a place where people bought books. We wanted to be a community hub where people could gather, create, play, listen, learn, and experience something together.

Books bind more than pages. They help us weave the stories that connect us at the points where our lives intersect.

The countdown continues. 10 Days to our Farewell to 1750 TX-97 party.

Memory #4:Our first school program event.
We were thrilled to host the Poteet HS Book Club for a day of activities. For some of the kids, it was their first time being in a bookstore.

11 Days to Our Party!

People are asking, “Can I do anything to help?”

Well, yes. Come buy some books.

Anything we sell between now and then is weight we don’t have to lift ourselves.

Favorite Memories:

Getting ready for the Grand Opening of Fairy Tale Books took family, friends, and a little contract labor. We had fixtures to unload, shelves to place, and a store to build in a hurry.

We opened on November 18, 2023, which is also our wedding anniversary.

When Wendy and I got married, I jokingly suggested we should have a shoe budget. Wendy said she would rather have a book budget instead.

After we opened Fairy Tale Books, I told her, “Happy Anniversary! I got you a bookstore!”

She laughed and said, “So what are you going to do for next year?”

We’re moving down the road to 1400 TX-97 in Jourdanton, Texas.

We hope you’ll join us on June 13th at our current location as we say goodbye to the place where Fairy Tale Books began and prepare for our next chapter.

**Favorite Memory #3:**

In October 2023, we attended FallCon, the Mountains & Plains booksellers conference. We met many great authors, fellow bookstore owners, and vendors.

Among the best were David and Lisa Uhrik of Franklin Fixtures and Plenty Bookshop Bookstore in Cookeville, Tennessee. I don’t think we could have opened without their gracious help.

So Wendy and I took a road trip to Cookeville, rented a 26-foot truck, and drove our book displays back to Texas.

In one month, we traveled more than 5,000 miles to get ready to open Fairy Tale Books by November 18, 2023.

It took a lot of miles, a lot of help, and a lot of faith to turn the idea of a bookstore into a real place for our community.

Favorite Memories:
In September 2023, we also had our first pop-up at Sunshine House Coffee .

The staff was wonderful and very supportive of our ambition to create a bookstore in

That early encouragement meant a lot. Before we had shelves, signs, or a front door of our own, we had people willing to make room for the idea.

**Favorite Memory #1:**

In September of 2023, we found out the space next to Sunshine House would soon be available for lease. We immediately visited what was then the 3S office to check it out.

From imagination to Grand Opening in less than 90 days.
