Navajo Double Carinated and Twisted Wire Bracelet w Turquoise c. 1910-20 Size 6 5/8
During the early 20th century one of the favored bracelets for Navajo’s personal wear was made using 2 carinated bands with twisted wire running through the center. They would then overlay it with Turquoise cabochons, often on silver plates with stamping such as this one. This particular bracelet has very unusual serrated edges on the plates. There is one similar to it in Henry Mera’s book ‘Indian Silverwork of the Southwest Vol 1’, pg. 33, Plate 8.
You can also see circled radiant stamps on the twisted wire at the backside of the bracelet. Chevrons and crescent shapes are stamped on the carinated bands at top and bottom. Circa 1910-1920. Weight: 46 grams
Inside length end to end: 5 1/4”
Gap between ends: 1 3/8”
Width: 1/2”

Navajo Cross Naja Squash Blossom Necklace c. 1920-30
Another unusual “Sqaush Blossom” style necklace, featuring naja’s with crosses instead of actual squash blossoms. I have always loved the naja’s that feature crosses in the center, it just so aesthetically pleasing. The necklace length is 24” with a hook clasp, and has handmade silver beads with 4 between each naja. The Central naja has an oval turquoise cabochon. Weight: 78 grams

Pueblo or Navajo Ingot Silver Repoussé Bracelet, Circa 1900, Size 6 5/8
The repoussé work done on this hand hammered ingot bracelet was done similarly to the method of swedging. Where, in this case, rounded grooves would be made in a block of wood and the rounded chisel runs along the back to create the relief on the front. Chisel and file work is used to define the lines on the top and stamp the repeated design along the center and edges. What a beautiful outcome! Some attribute this style to Pueblo silversmiths, and I have seen a similar one that was collected in Taos in the 1890s. Whether it was Pueblo or Navajo, it is a wonder piece of historic Native American silver work.
Weight is 60 grams
Inside length end to end: 5 5/8”

Now in shop. Navajo Arts & Crafts Guild Silver Ingot Cuff c. 1940s Size 6 5/8
This cuff is a great example of pieces made by The Navajo Arts and Crafts Guild (NACG). The guild was established in 1941, formed by master silversmiths; Ambrose Roanhorse, Fred Peshlakai, and Chester Yellowhair. They were teaching their exacting traditional methods, choosing the most promising students. Only the finest pieces were selected to bear the horned sun hallmark of the Guild. The pieces went not to the usual tourist trade, as the return was not seen as profitable for this caliber of work, but to the high-end jewelry market in the East, Midwest and Southwest, such as Tiffany’s, and Marshall Fields. Materials and supplies were issued only to smiths who could meet the standards and requirements for quality established by the guild, which meant no power-driven machinery or sheet silver could be used in their making. NACG pieces were characterized by their elegant look, with clean lines, and often modernist designs. Weight 54 grams

Now in shop. Navajo or Zuni “Box Bow” Squash Blossom Necklace w Turquoise circa 1930-40
The squash blossom necklace originated with the Navajo in the latter 1800s. The “box bow” design was an evolution of that design which emerged in the 1930s. This particular necklace has no blossom under the “box” which is unusual, but highly effective in this smaller scale necklace. The box, comes to us as merely a square cut turquoise stone set on an elaborate box design with 4 raindrops on either side of the stone. These are all spaced between 4 hand made silver beads. The Naja pendant, an ancient symbol of protection, has 3 stones, one square cut and the 2 at the ends are round. It’s a beautiful necklace and easy to wear as it’s lighter in weight than most squash blossom necklaces. Weight 64 grams
Length end to end: 18”
Naja dimensions: 1 7/8” x 1 3/4”

Now in shop! Ingot Silver Navajo Cuff with Indian Heads on Terminals, Size 7, circa 1900-1910
The use of figural Indian chief heads on bracelet terminals, and spoon ends, started in the late 1800s for the tourist trade. This cuff has precisely done hand stamp work, including whirling logs, a symbol that was used in Native American designs up until World War II, at which time Native artisans signed a proclamation to discontinue using the symbol. This ingot bracelet is made from coin silver and weighs 26 grams.

Early 20th Century Navajo 9 Stone Turquoise Ingot Cuff, Size 7 1/16
Outstanding Navajo ingot bracelet smoothed down from years of wear. The 9 stones are hand cut and set into hand made bezels. The central square cut cabochon, 3 small round stones on each side, followed by the oval outside stones, are flanked on each end by twisted wire. Hand stamping on the sides includes radiant crescents back to back and round punches in between each continued to the ends. It was obviously well loved and worn regularly by it’s owner, as shown by the buttery texture both inside and out, of this ingot silver cuff. Circa 1920-30. Weighs 38 grams.
