Fun fact: I went to a pre-school named Tiny Tigers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana while my mom was attending classes at LSU.

Probably has very little to do with these small Tiger paintings I made, but you know… when you look back on how the narrative of your life has unfolded, there can be some surprising pivot points.

A giant painting I made that is something like a bountiful goddess in the life giving rain.

I made it last year just before an extended stay in Maui during which it rained quite heavily for most of the days (AND I LOVED IT).

In retrospect this painting feels like a premonition.

As you may know, I live in the desert, but grew up basically in the swamps of South Louisiana. Just THINKING of rain makes me feel more peaceful and balanced. I love living here in Joshua Tree but I miss the cathartic downpours of my earlier life.

Feel free to inquire about painting details. It’s quite a large painting.

I will sing my stupid song anyway.

A stand for creativity in the face of adversity.

Created as a personal talisman during a moment of frustration in my studio, this piece emerged from feelings of overwhelming inadequacy in the face of the world’s pain and problems.

I believe that art matters - it makes life more liberating and more beautiful - yet there have been many months when discouragement and futility crept in.

In the end, I decided that all things being equal, I would rather make art than not make art - so that’s what I’ll do.

A rainy day in Maui. Can you hear the rain falling?

I’m about halfway through my two week retreat here in this beautiful home nestled in a fruit orchard by the ocean.

Here are some of the sketches I’ve made of the fruit, the seashells, the… luscious abundance.

Am I living out my Circe in her Garden painting? I think so. I even met two cats during my walks among the fruit trees.

Thank you to my gifted friends and for this time in your wonderful new home. 🙏✨

And thank you to my beloved for prompting this adventure.

These are acrylic on lovely thick watercolor paper. I’m thankful to the me who decided the extra weight in my suitcase for the art supplies was worth it.

Meet Esmeralda and Loretta, my two newest May fine art giclée prints from my Guardians Collection. Available framed and unframed in my shop.

Esmerelda was the first I painted of the series and she inspired me to create more.

I was especially compelled by the shadows created by the cowboy hat over the eyes.

My expressive impasto brushwork shows up in the bright colors of the faces and the vivid backgrounds — but much of the gestural energy comes through a different medium: painterly drawing with oil paint stick. I’ve loved exploring how bold, confident linework plays against washes of underpainting, creating dynamic contrast and movement.

✨Finally…

California, New & Magnificent

I am delighted to announce that California, New & Magnificent is now available as a fine art print. The proofs are gorgeous (swipe to see those) and it gives me great pleasure to make the colors and energy of this work available to you.

Here, I reimagine a Gold Rush–era advertisement for “new and magnificent” clipper ships beckoning fortune seekers to California circa 1850.

For me, it carries another layer: California as a place where someone could begin again, with the promise of a new and magnificent life.

The original oil painting is part of my 2019 Souvenir series inspired by vintage travel posters. The print captures the exhilarating color palette and tempestuous brush strokes of the original.

NEW PRINT

Why do I love this little drawing so much?

I made it a few weeks ago when I was trying out some new colored pencils and just quietly leaving the door open in case a new idea for a painting series wanted to come floating in.

I find it so... cheering. I have an actual vase like this that I got at a thrift store 30 years ago, but in this drawing it takes on such a lovely metaphorical meaning.

I see it as the blossoming of one’s beautiful mind. A fertile imagination. Quiet bliss. Kindness. It gives me hope.

And now it’s a print.

I’m pleased to share my newest body of work, a collection of 24 original mixed-media oil paintings, Guardians: The Magnificent 17.

These paintings are very meaningful to me and it means a lot to me to be sharing them with you today.

Each painting (except for one) is 33” x 24” mixed media on unstretched canvas, intended to be float-mounted and framed.
