Je’Sani Smith was an outgoing, athletic young man who loved sports, especially basketball, being around friends, and nature. Unfortunately, on April 11, 2019 — eight days after his 18th birthday — Je’Sani Smith was tragically swept away by a rip current at Whitecap Beach in Corpus Christi, Texas.

In the time after Je’Sani’s death, people in the community rallied around Denson for support. Still, the general lack of awareness about rip currents amongst beachgoers bothered Denson. “I really thought my son’s situation was unique at the time,” says Denson. “But I realized it was a recurring issue. It had been happening before my son, and it kept happening after my son.”
