Bret's Guitar Repair

Bret's Guitar Repair Does your guitar need work? I'm here to help by providing affordable repair services to Colorado. I have been a guitarist since about 1983. Trial and error.

I used to take my guitars to a local tech for setups until I realized I was spending, what seemed like, a small fortune every time I needed something done! That's when I decided to learn how to do things myself. There were no YouTube or E-Books, or even the internet back then! I had to learn the hard way. Sure there were lots of errors, but I learned how to take care of my own guitars and then fri

ends started asking me to setup their guitars. My Wife talked me into starting a repair business after I helped someone out who had advertised they were in need of a tech. So, after all the years of doing my own repairs, I decided to give it a go. However, I was not going to over charge for any services. It is hard enough to for musicians to make any money doing what they love without having to spend it all on repairs. Instead, I would offer quality services at affordable prices with exceptional customer service. It's not enough to just work on someone's guitar and try to get it out the door as fast as possible. I want to know more about my customers and their playing styles so I can offer a service that best fits each individual client. Because, if it matters to you... shouldn't it matter to the person working on it as well?

I see more and more people new to working on their own instruments asking what's the best tool kit to buy for beginners.
I'm curious, what would you consider an essential tool to have in your own arsenal?

However, just to bring those interested up to speed; I broke 5 ribs a couple of months ago. That was extremely painful and kept me off my feet for a week, and then not able to lift more than 20 lbs for another 4 weeks.

I'm healing very well, but still do something stupid now and then and can feel it in my ribs.

Because of this, I haven't been doing much guitar work. But I'm slowly getting back into it. It may take me a little longer to get them done, but things are getting better.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas. And here's looking at a Happy New Year for all!

I have to say, I dont know why more people arent playing Schecter guitars. I absolutely love this brand. I own three now, ranging from the $1300 price point, down to the $550 price point and love each one.
I just got a Schecter Omen Elite FR and it plays fantastic. Nice thin C shape neck with a 41mm nut makes this an excellent guitar for shorter fingers (like mine.) And the Schecter Heretic pickups sound great. (I can only imagine what the Banshee Ultra Thin C Neck feels like)
If anyone is looking for a great mid level guitar ($500 range), then I highly suggest giving Schecter a try. You may have some hit or misses with older, cheaper Schecters, but the new ones are really good quality.
(this is not an advertisement for Schecter. Just my opinion)

Tools are the most valued part of any Tech/Luther's workbench. I have a place for every tool I own. However, I am finding I have more tools than places now.
At any rate, I spent about 30min searching for one specific pair of pliers I use for one specific purpose that doesn't pop up often.
Looked everywhere in my shop. Asked my wife if she had it. Asked my son if he'd seen it. Nowhere to be found, so I had to come up with an alternative... I did.
Went to turn my fan on the other day and, low and behold, my dumb ass used that tool to prop my fan up a week prior and forgot.
I am now after a fan that I don't have to tilt back with a pair of pliers lol
Moral of the story... get the right tool for the job so you don't have to micky rig anything.

I'd like to give a big thank you to all the musicians out there. Famous, not famous, new, experienced, liked, or not liked.
It takes a tremendous amount of courage to put yourself out there for everyone to judge. Judge your singing, your playing, you music, your creativity, and your song writing strengths and weaknesses.
Without every musician that has lived or died, we would not have the incredible music we have today... and will have tomorrow. Because every musician has inspiration from a multitude of other musicians.
So... thank you!

I have realized that I will look for a reason to buy a new tool... or I should say, I find a tool that looks really cool and figure out a reason that I need it lol

To go along with those new Music Nomad nut files (which I really like btw), I have also gotten a few things to make it a bit easier to file nuts.
Man, I love new tools lol

Does your guitar sound muddy and loose its brightness when you turn the volume down? Might consider a Treble Bleed circuit.
There are many varieties, even variable circuits that let you dial in that perfect tone at any volume.
