1992 Mesa Dual Rec REV D!!

This amp came in after going down over 10 years ago with an arcing power tube. Because the amp had sat for so long it had some problems that needed to be dealt with.

Upon initial inspection, a previous tech had replaced a blown MOV bud didn’t clean up the mess it left behind. Carbon is conductive so the power board got removed and cleaned up.

The filter caps dated back to 1990 so they were long overdue for a change. These blue atom caps are notorious for drying out after long periods of dormancy. Also the low voltage supply caps get worked pretty hard in these amps so they had to go too. The board is out, so let’s hit the bias supply too.

Next, all the carbon comp resistors on the boards and the screen supply get replaced with metal film or metal oxide low tolerance parts for stability.

Lastly, all the boards, controls, and connectors get a thorough cleaning and final inspection.

After a new set of tubes and burning in, this is one of the best sounding Dual Recs I’ve ever played. This revision has a lot in common with the famed REV C (including the turd of a clean channel), and it IS the sound you hear in your head when you think Dual Rectifier.

1967 Fender Super Reverb! There is a story behind every vintage amp. This one came to my customer after a GC purchased 70’s Pro-Reverb went up in smoke on a gig. GC made it right and traded him even for this beautiful 67 Super. His request was to make this a reliable gigging amp.

Upon initial inspection it was obvious several techs had already been inside this amp. The power supply recap was done well and recently so that was left alone. There were several patch up repairs that had been done over the years that needed to be done properly. The tremolo circuit was hacked together and ticking badly. Also, almost all of the original carbon comp resistors had drifted well outside of their tolerance range. On top of that, there was dc present on the eyelet board around a few of the coupling and tone caps causing scratchy pots.

We decided to depopulate the board, soak and clean it with IPA and replace all the old work and carbon comp resistors with high quality metal film resistors for lower noise. All of the blue molded caps that were left went back on the board(they were still good), and any missing ones were replaced with Panasonics. We also updated the tremolo circuit to slow it down. With a new LDR and lead dress, the ticking disappeared.

I also did my standard rectifier protection, grid stopper update, and screen resistor upgrade. Most of these changes are sonically invisible, but make a big difference in the playability and tube longevity.

All in all, this is one of the best examples of an AB763 Super Reverb that I have ever heard!

Carvin 1984 X-100B

This amp came in with no output after sitting in a barn for a decade. Upon further inspection the first dropper in the power supply was blown open and the filter caps were starting to bulge.

Given its age we decided to do a full service that included all new electrolytic caps, new power supply node resistors (where necessary), and a couple of new output tubes (2 had red-plated in the past).

Along with this all the pots, jacks, and switches got a thorough cleaning and this amp rips! The clean channel is pristine, and the dirt has a very vocal singing sustain.

Ampeg SVT Classic USA!

This came in with the fault light flashing and would not come out of standby. This is a good thing. The protection circuit detects tube faults and shuts down the power amp to prevent catastrophic failure.

In the case of this amp, it was a bad tube that triggered the fault indicator. The tube in question took out it’s screen resistor. Some argue that Ampeg designed the power amp to use these screen resistors as fuses. In my experience, the protection circuit works just fine for this duty. It detects overcurrent on any tube and shuts down the power amp.

With this in mind, I normally move the screen resistors up in value to 1k 5 watt resistors. This does two things for the power amp. One-if there’s a tube fault it doesn’t eat the screen resistor. Two-it balances the screen current a little bit better between the tubes.

The protection circuit does its job and shuts the amp down and now you just have to change the tubes instead of pulling all the boards out.

Mesa Nomad 45 combo!

The customer purchased this amp used and said the reverb had never worked for them. It probably never worked at all. I discovered a missing ground reference for the low-voltage supply that literally smoked out the zener diodes and the opamps in the +/- 15v section.

This amp is from the early 2000s and since the board had to come out, it was time for a full service. All the electrolytics got replaced with high-quality components. The opamps were socketed and replaced and the ground reference was restored. The zeners were updated to 5 watt parts.

After all was said and done, this thing sounds killer and you can get Cretan cleans to dual rec dirt from this amp. I dig it.

4 Gain Stage MOD Marshall 2204!

This amp had been modded in the past and the current owner purchased it from Guitar Center after “being put back to stock.” It was not quite stock, and several of the signal caps were burned down to the foil by some haphazard tech work.

The customer requested a mod to get it more in line with a Bogner Snorkler. I like the Snorkler, but the low end leaves something to be desired. I decided to just shoot for the moon with a 4 gain stage mod that had all the chewiness of the Snorkler with a tight thick bottom end.

Nailed it.

This thing sounds massive with all the singing sustain and palm heavy chuck you could ever want. Even with all that gain, it still cleans up real nice with the volume control.

I love modding amps…

Mesa Mark V:25

The amp came in with no lights on the dash. The low voltage supply had crapped out and none of the switching or lights were operational.

After an inspection I discovered a shorted tantalum cap on the output of the voltage regulator that had taken down the 12v supply.

Being a mesa, everything has to come out to change components on the board (and even had to remove some parts that are stacked in the way).

I installed a higher spec cap and a new regulator and we’re back in business!

Dm for repair/mod inquiries.

Marshall JVM 205H!

This amp came in with low output and erratic switching, and no use of midi or the foot controller.

Ultimately, it came down to being a bad micro controller chip, and a bad expander for the digital switching on the front panel. The micro controller in these amps controls midi, foot switch, and front panel switching all at the same time. The good news is Marshall still makes these amps so parts are readily available and we were able to get it back up and running in short order.

This one also came in with a choke installed in properly so we got that sorted out and the amp sounds incredible!

For anyone putting a choke in these amps, make sure it’s done the way that you see in the video. I have seen quite a few of these amps come through with a choke installed this way and it makes me think there is some forum post out there telling people to do it the wrong way.

Sunn SONARO! This late 60s amp needed a full servicing because it had remained untouched since the day it rolled off the factory floor. Safety standards have changed so the power supply had to be updated to accommodate. I rebuilt the power supply with modern radio caps to handle the excessive B+ voltage in this amp. Even though the amp is rated at 40 W, after the servicing, it was producing 80 W clean!

90s Fender Prosonic!

This amp is part of the Bruce Zinky lineup that he was designing for fender in the 90s. It Has a great clean channel in a really versatile gain channel.

My client bought this amp from guitar center and it never worked right. Sound was cutting out and had a little bit of a hum. The main problem on this amp was a bad volume and treble pot. Because we had the amp apart, we decided to give it a full service and replace the caps and power tubes. After a good cleaning and bias, this amp sounds as good as it did when it was brand new. The Zinky amps are something special.
