Perfect example of overachieving.

This is one of those fairly expensive internet brand converters that the customer was stating that they couldn’t get the converter to lock up, and they asked us to investigate why.

Our conclusion: The GM 6L80/90 converter apply piston features an overly aggressive machine job that is unlikely to succeed. There is insufficient adhesive on the lining to fill those massive grooves, and the outcome is predictable.

Beginning stages of failure on the 68RFE. The converter clutch delaminates causing cross leaks resulting in TCC slippage and overheating. In addition the turbine shaft seal fails compounding the issue further.

It was a good day at the office. I'm really lucky to have a workplace after Helene, considering many others don't and the rebuilding process will be challenging and slow.

Disclaimer….This is not demonstrative advertising, nor am I attempting to defame anyone!

This is the reason we only use Sonnax billet covers in all of our 68RFE builds.

As you can see in the video, this “homemade” or “house built” cover the center pillar that supports the piston is about .020 off Center, this is no good. It creates many issues, mostly balance problems, premature clutch failure, and generally speaking, is just not right.

So be careful when selecting your provider and look for excessive weights 30/40/50 grams welded to the cover to compensate for this stupidity.

DTC P1870 and P741

This is a GM 4L80E converter that has the usual clutch failure. The early pistons were not heat treated and they would crack, so they decided to heat treat the piston for strength, great idea, but no surface prep was done prior to bonding the lining on a dirty piston.

Anytime you heat metal carbon comes to the surface. The thin layer of carbon was not removed so the adhesive doesn’t stick. The result is a P741 TCC stuck off code along with a P1870 transmission component slipping because the converter clutch can never fully engage. Then computer will turn on the check engine light and go into failsafe mode. These are the before and after pics of the surface prep and bonding with a new Borg Warner lining.
