2024 was a tough year for the archive but we made it out alive! thank you so much for all the support yall have given us since day one, but especially this year. struggling with a herniated disc and chronic pain while maintaining the archive was a challenge, but day by day, my health’s improved and we’re looking forward to 2025 and whatever shenanigans jack and i get up to,,,,,, 🫶🏽-janel

the thing about last weekend is that jack and I were living in the moment so hard that we forgot to take more pics and videos, but the good news is that we’ll be back at the armory in may!!!!! thank you to all of youse that came out and had a little chat with us 😇 as always, it was a blast!

from janel’s personal collection: con edison’s (that’s right, the energy company) let’s clear the air - a 1971 educational record about nuclear energy 💡

think about it: in 1971, there was no internet, probably no encyclopedia articles about nuclear energy, and certainly no casual dinner conversations about it either… I imagine educational records like this were played in people’s homes while they did other tasks, similar to how we usually get our chores done while listening to a podcast…

from janel’s personal collection: all 4 sandy bull records on vanguard from 1963 to 1972 🪕

I got these in a haul last year! it took me some time to finally give all 4 a listen, and wow these are killer. early explorations of what would later be known as “world music” [the legitimacy of this phrase being debatable, of course], and so obviously an influence of many household psychedelic and experimental bands of the 70s (both patti smith and steve winwood have credited him as an influence).

only E pluribus unum (1969) is on streaming, but you can find the rest of the vanguard releases on youtube!
