It’s Saturday afternoon and I finally had an opportunity to get up to the beach to see if the near shore activity had bounced back after almost 10 days of big Easterly winds and piles of sargassum piling up on the local beaches We finally got some westerly/ South westerly winds to turn on and blow these mats of w**ds back offshore so it has become fishable . I hit some beach accesses from Herman’s Bay South yesterday morning and came up with one nice catfish. I decided to try the incoming tide at 4 pm yesterday afternoon and put a few real nice whiting in the cooler along with releasing a couple of pompano and playing tug of war with an undersized snook that quickly released . The snook hammered a piece of Jingle bites Fishbites and was a ball to fight on 12 lb test . This morning I headed out to catch the high tide and put some whiting in the cooler but apparently the whiting at the first four beaches I tried didn’t get the memo to start chewing . Finally at the fifth beach I tried I found some stud whiting and put together a nice catch . It’s the time of year that these guys should be making their appearance known and with the nice conditions we have had the the question should not be if they are here but where they are . It is fun to be fishing these light 7 foot 6 inch light action Quantum Fishing Zeal Spinning rods paired with their 3000 model Strive spinning reels . Anyone that has read my posts from this past month has read how unbelievably the Fishbites Red/ Green Jingle bites bait has produced and once again these past two days they continue to get bites from anything swimming in that near shore trough . I have been using my Capt Paul Jingle Bites croaker rig that has a red and green bead to match the color of the Fishbites. Snook Nook Bait and Tackle has that rig in stock now along with the Jingle Bites Fishbites . It is producing . Fish around the high tide mark, do not overcast these fish , and tip the Jingle Bites with a small piece of shrimp and have some fun .

I forgot to put this post up the other day on this page when I originally did it so it’s a few days old but

I hit the beach this morning, south end of Hutchinson Island, with a couple of pompano rods and one short rod with the thought that if the pompano were not biting I would make an effort to see if the spring whiting bite was starting . After last weeks wind event coupled with the waves of sargassum w**d it was nice to see the w**ds not in the water and 1 foot waves . I did get a bite on the long rod and put one pompano in the cooler but that would be the beginning and the end to those bites this morning. High tide was around 1245 today on the beach and I got the 7’6inch Quantum Fishing Zeal rod coupled with a Quantam Strive 3000 reel ready to go . Fishbites Jingle Bites bait and a small piece of shrimp was my bait choice and it started right away . I always use Ed Killers statement that he would put in his column in the paper every year, “ the whiting are biting “. They bit right through the top of the tide and once the cooler was full I left . Find a beach with a well defined near shore trough and I’ll bet you’ll put a fish fry together . Today if I cast more than 15 yards I did not get any bites . Water temperature was 78 today , it’s the month of May , and the water had great color .If anyone is planning on a Memorial Day Weekend fish fry now is the time to start stocking up . Just a quick reminder that I will be doing my Spring Surf Fishing Seminar this Saturday , the 21st , at Bass Pro Shops on Gatlin Blvd in Port St Lucie . The seminar will begin at 2 pm . We always seem to run out of seats at Bass Pro so I would recommend that you get there a little bit early to get a good seat . Hope to see you there.

Croakers for days!!

I had good friend and former co worker Tab Filipowski and his brother in law Danny Brosnan out this morning for a “grocery” trip for whiting and croaker . Tab and Danny fished offshore yesterday with Tabs son and caught sailfish, mahi, and blackfin tuna so today was the take it easy and catch a fish fry trip . I got to the beach a bit before them and actually put some whiting in the cooler in no time . Unfortunately the sharks showed up in numbers right at the high tide mark and literally were chasing the whiting almost on to the sand . The sharks made their presence known for about 45 minutes and we never had another whiting bite after that . The good news was the croaker showed and Tab and Danny filled the cooler . This is the first trip I have had in this fall and winter season where the croaker were in the near shore trough in big numbers . EZFLEA Fishbites tipped with a small piece of shrimp was the ticket today . I can’t say enough good things about these Quantum Fishing Strive 3000 reels teamed with a 7’6” Quantum Zeal Rod for this type of fun fishing . These bigger croakers will put a bend in the rod and really allows you to have some fun getting them onto the beach . The drag performance on all of the Quantum reels is second to none from the small Strive 3000 model up to the 8000 Cabo’s I have been using . After the guys filled their cooler I stayed and had a ball filling mine and left them biting . The wind that was forecast came on while I was filleting the fish and it looks like this new front we are getting is going to start a few days of some challenging conditions on the beach . Hopefully some numbers of pompano will show after this system and I’ll be able to give the whiting and croaker a break . Those of us that fish South Hutchinson Island have a great opportunity to catch these nice whiting and croaker on this light tackle because of the structure of a number of beaches in our area . Right now if you find a beach access down this way with a well defined drop off into that first trough you stand a good chance of having a great day with these tasty and fun to catch fish . Let’s hope this wind backs off this week and the forecast is wrong. Good luck and catch em up .
