Before you bring home another plant β make sure it won't kill your
pet. πΆ
Most plant parents have NO idea how many common houseplants are
actually toxic to cats and dogs. Some cause mild stomach upset.
Others cause kidney failure within hours.
The good news: there are plenty of stunning plants that are 100%
safe to have around your furry family.
β
SAFE TO HAVE (even if your cat chews them):
- Spider Plant
- Boston Fern
- Calathea (any variety)
- Parlor Palm
- African Violet
- Hoya
- Money Tree
- Christmas Cactus
- Areca Palm
- Peperomia
β TOXIC β Keep out of reach (or skip entirely):
- Pothos β causes intense mouth irritation, drooling, vomiting
- Philodendron β same family as Pothos, same risks
- Monstera β calcium oxalate crystals burn the mouth
- Peace Lily β vomiting and difficulty swallowing
- ZZ Plant β irritation if chewed
- Snake Plant β vomiting and nausea
- Easter Lily β DEADLY to cats, causes kidney failure
- Dieffenbachia ("Dumb Cane") β severe oral swelling
- Aloe β yes, even aloe β vomiting and lethargy
- Sago Palm β DEADLY to dogs, liver failure
The lily warning especially: a cat doesn't have to eat the lily.
Just grooming pollen off its fur is enough to cause kidney failure.
If you have cats, no lilies. Ever.
