WANTED: women who create.

We’re looking for women authors, makers + creatives to join us for BOOKS, BITES, & BOO(ZE) on October 23.

For authors, we’re looking for horror, paranormal, gothic, dark romance, thrillers, dark fantasy, witches, monsters, ghosts + stories that get a little strange.

For makers + creatives, bring us the unexpected. Bookish. Spooky. Beautiful. Strange. Delicious. Slightly unhinged. The things people will spot across the room and immediately need to investigate.

Think you belong in the room?

Applications are officially open at the link in the comments.

A little over halfway through August, and 921 books have left our shelves.

Our goal is 2,000.

I love watching that number climb.

2,000 is not some arbitrary sales goal I decided we needed to chase.

Every book that leaves this store helps us build what comes next.

You’ve watched that happen in real time.

More books sold means we can bring in more books. We can take chances on indie authors. We can expand the sections you keep asking for. We can build Be/tween. Grow Be/little. Give fantasy more room. Give romance an entire space. Add 52 bookshelves because we have absolutely no concept of moderation.

It means we get to keep listening to what this community wants and then actually do something about it.

And then those books leave again.

They end up on nightstands and in backpacks and classrooms. They get passed to friends. They start conversations. They make someone feel seen. They introduce someone to a perspective they hadn’t considered before.

Then we take what you’ve invested here and put it right back into making this bookstore better.

921 books in 18 days.

921 little votes for what we’re building here.

And we still have almost half of August left.

Let’s see what we can build with the next 1,079.

BOOKS, BITES, & BOO(ZE)

On Friday, October 23, we’re turning the bookstore into an after-dark gathering of women authors, makers + delicious things.

Meet women writing horror, paranormal, gothic, dark romance, thrillers, dark fantasy, monsters, witches, ghosts + all the wonderfully weird things we love to read.

Shop a curated lineup of women makers + creatives.

Collect treats along the way with your exclusive event tote.

Grab something delicious to eat.

Use your drink ticket for a cocktail or mocktail.

Shop the bookstore for 15% off.

And wear the costume you haven’t had a good enough excuse to wear yet.

Tickets are available now.

WANT TO BE PART OF THE NIGHT?

We’re officially accepting applications from women authors, makers + creatives.

If you write something spooky, strange, sexy, unsettling or impossible to put down…

If you make something weird, wonderful, delicious or completely unnecessary but we’re going to buy it anyway…

We want to hear from you.

Applications are open now at the link in the comments.

Know someone who would be perfect for this?

Tag her below. We want to find her. 🖤

Saturday, August 29, we’re sharing the bookstore with Lincoln University to celebrate the newest edition of their Arts & Letters Journal.

It’s a literary magazine filled with poetry and critical essays written by LU students.

And…

many of the students will be here reading their own work!

We’d really love to give them a room full of people listening.

Come grab a seat. Meet the student writers behind the pages. And celebrate new voices being written, published, and shared right here in Jefferson City.

Saturday, August 29 | 2–4 PM

Free + open to everyone.

RSVP + event details linked in the comments.

The bookstore currently looks like a hot mess.

Not a cute “behind the scenes” hot mess.

A what exactly happened in here and should we call someone? hot mess.

And we are approximately 25 hours away from one of our bigger events of the year.

Excellent.

This is, unfortunately, a recurring theme in my life as a creative business owner with ADHD.

I have an idea.

The idea is reasonable.

Then I think, but what if we also…

And suddenly a small project has developed a supporting cast, three subplots and a construction phase.

I have never once met an idea I couldn’t make significantly more complicated.

Add in time blindness, and my brain genuinely believes there is plenty of time right up until the moment the clock politely informs me that there is, in fact, NOT plenty of time.

So yes… tomorrow is Romance Bookstore Day .

Books That Make You Blush is getting an enormous new home.

And instead of stopping there like a sensible person, I decided this was also the perfect time to rearrange the rest of the bookstore.

Because why make one thing better when you can temporarily destroy everything?

But underneath the boxes, piles, books with no current address and me wandering around holding something I picked up 20 minutes ago…

there is SO MUCH new to explore.

Historical fiction has its own shelf.

Fantasy has expanded.

Thriller + horror have expanded.

Science fiction finally has a shelf of its own.

YA has grown, and we’re created a brand-new Be/tween area for those readers who have outgrown the little-kid shelves but aren’t quite ready for everything YA has to offer.

Be/little has expanded board books and a new play station for our smallest bookstore people.

Halloween is officially creeping into the store this weekend.

And up front, there is currently a giant empty space where our series used to live.

We didn’t forget about it.

It’s waiting for its next big reveal later this month.

What is that reveal?

Excellent question.

I am exercising an incredible amount of restraint by not telling you.

Mostly because I haven’t told myself yet either.

Future Lauren has a plan, though.

We’re also saying goodbye to our NYT Bestseller wall and replacing it with the books our community and booksellers can’t stop talking about.

So if you walk in tomorrow and think the bookstore feels different…

It is.

A LOT different.

We didn’t just add 52 bookshelves.

We used them as an excuse to rethink how you move through this store, what you discover, which stories get more room, and what we want this place to become next.

Right now, though?

It looks like a bookstore sneezed.

And I have 25 hours to convince everyone this was the plan all along.

See you tomorrow.

WE HAVE BOOKS ON SHELVES.

Are they all where they’re supposed to be?

Absolutely not.

Do I currently know where everything else in the bookstore is?

Also no.

We move one section.

Which means another section has to move.

Which means that section needs a new home.

Which means suddenly I’m standing in the middle of the bookstore holding a stack of books wondering how I accidentally started a full-scale retail migration.

Everything is shifting.

There are books everywhere.

Nothing is finished.

I have changed my mind approximately 147 times.

But LOOK AT THIS.

This is what we managed to get shelved in Books That Make You Blush today, and she is already starting to look GOOD.

There’s still so much coming.

For now, please enjoy this tiny glimpse of progress while I go figure out where the hell I put the rest of the bookstore.

We’re looking for romance readers with opinions.

Strong ones.

Applications are officially open for the very first Blush Reps.

This is not a “post three times a month and here’s a discount code” kind of rep program.

We want you in it.

In the conversations.
In the bookstore.
In the decisions.
In the creating.
In what comes next.

We want to know what you’re reading before everyone else is talking about it.

Which indie author deserves more shelf space.

What you think we’re missing.

What you’d buy if we handed you the bookstore budget.

And what fictional person has permanently altered your standards.

But we also want to talk about the bigger stuff.

Why romance matters.

Why stories centered on women’s desire, pleasure and agency have so often been dismissed as frivolous.

Who gets to be wanted.

Who gets to see themselves loved.

And how we can build romance shelves with room for more people, more stories and more perspectives.

That’s what The Blush Reps are here to help us do.

There will be Creator Nights in the bookstore. Books + ARCs. A monthly book allowance. Rep discounts. Early access. Author opportunities. Your recommendations on our shelves. A voice in what we buy, curate, create + build. And more as we grow.

You don’t need a huge following.

You don’t need to agree with us about everything.

In fact, we hope you don’t.

We want your taste.
Your perspective.
Your curiosity.
Your strong-ass book opinions.

Are you ready to help us build something worth blushing about?

The Blush Reps applications are officially open.🖤

I HAVE MADE IT.

After years of building businesses, creating content, posting my entire life on the internet, and feeding the algorithm like a tiny digital Tamagotchi…

Meta has officially paid me.

One whole cent.

$0.01.

Please respect my privacy during this sudden and dramatic change in tax bracket.

I haven’t decided what I’ll do with the money yet. Invest? Retire early? Put it toward the 52 bookshelves?

The possibilities are limited.

Anyway, thank you to everyone who made this possible. I couldn’t have earned this penny without you.
