Most people think scissors are just a tool. Cut paper, cut thread, cut tags off new clothes. But in spiritual practice, scissors are one of the most powerful protective and energetic tools you can keep in your space.

Scissors have been used across cultures for centuries to cut cords. Not metaphorically. Literally. The act of opening and closing blades creates an energetic severing, which is why scissors placed open under a bed or near a doorway have long been used as a protective ward against negative energy, unwanted spirits, and ill intentions entering your home.

In folk magic and rootwork traditions, scissors left open are considered one of the strongest tools for cutting ties to people, situations, and energetic attachments that no longer serve you. If you have been doing cord cutting work with visualization alone, adding a physical pair of scissors to your ritual elevates the intention into the physical plane, where energy meets matter.

Closed scissors are a different energy entirely. A closed pair placed near an entryway acts as a seal, locking out what you do not want crossing your threshold. Many practitioners keep a small pair near the front door specifically for this reason.

They are also used in uncrossing work, cutting through hexes or crossed conditions, and in releasing spells where the goal is finality. You are not hoping something ends. You are declaring it done.
