Trout don't feed in one layer of water. They feed in three β€” surface for hatching adults, the film for emergers, the column for nymphs. A single dry covers one layer. A dry-dropper covers two. The math is the argument.

Four proven pairings. Four water types. Hopper-Dropper Classic for banks and grass edges. Technical Mayfly Rig for spring creeks and selective fish. Caddis-Water Rig for riffles. Heavy Water Rig for deep runs and pocket water.

June is the peak window β€” post-runoff clarity, stacking hatches, trout still feeding opportunistically across every column. The full guide breaks down the rig anatomy, the four pairings, and which one to fish for the water in front of you.

You fish hard all day. You get to the river early. You work it until
you've had enough. Then you call it at 6 PM and head home β€” just
before the best fishing of the day starts.

The last 90 minutes of legal light outfish the entire midday window
combined. Water cools. Insects pour off the surface. Trout that hugged
deep seams at noon work the shallow shelf at 8:30 PM. And the water
that was crowded at midday is empty. The bite isn't unreliable. Our
timing is.

Today on the blog: Evening Fly Fishing β€” the window most anglers miss.
The three evening windows (golden hour, magic hour, legal dark), what
hatches in each one, and eight patterns including a mouse for after
dark.

You've got the right fly in the box. You're on the water at the right
time. You're making decent drifts in decent water. And you're catching
a fraction of what's actually possible.

The Yellow Sally is the most misunderstood stonefly in American fly
fishing. It hatches every warm afternoon from late May into August,
on nearly every wild trout watershed in the country. Trout key on it
hard. And most anglers fish it wrong β€” sizing up when they should
size down, dead-drifting when they should twitch, fishing the dun
when fish are eating emergers. The hatch isn't unreliable. Our read
on it is.

June Fly of the Month: a deep dive on the small yellow stonefly most
anglers misread. Where the pattern came from, how to actually read
the hatch, the three mistakes that cost you fish, and the eight
patterns that earn their place in a Sally fly box.

Every famous June hatch has a quiet twin.

The Green Drake gets the magazine covers. The Sulphur catches the fish.
The Salmonfly fills the boat ramps. The Yellow Sally fills the net. The Hex headlines the Au Sable. The smallmouth on a popper out-fishes both. Every region has a famous hatch β€” and a producing hatch nobody's writing about.

We just put together a coast-to-coast late spring and early summer hatch guide. Six watersheds. Twenty-four patterns. The producing hatches that out-fish the famous ones, region by region β€” from Eastern Sulphurs to Western Yellow Sallies, Hex water in the Midwest to spinner falls in the Pacific Northwest.

Most anglers fish the salmonfly hatch for about ten days β€” the week or
two it's popping on their home water. Then they put the big foam away and
move on. But that's not the hatch. That's a slice of it.

The salmonfly hatch is a wave. It starts in late May on low-elevation
main-stem rivers and climbs up-elevation through June into early July β€”
freestone water, then mid-elevation valleys, then upper tributaries at
8,000+ feet. Same hatch. Different elevation. Four to six weeks of peak
fishing for the anglers who know how to follow it.

Our new guide breaks down the whole pilgrimage β€” why the hatch moves, the
four phases that dictate how you fish it, and exactly which patterns to
carry at every stage. The fish are bigger than they'll be all year, and
the window is wider than most anglers realize.

The salmonfly hatch is two weeks. The stonefly nymph is twelve months. Trout know the difference β€” most anglers don't.

Our May Fly of the Month breaks down the stonefly playbook: lifecycle, four species, and the nymph-to-dry transition that separates a good fly box from a great one.

Whether you're nymphing pre-runoff or prepping foam dries, this is the category that covers more of your year than any other.
