Swift Crafts

Swift Crafts Adventure starts here: handcrafted jewelry and accessories for modern-day fairies, sword maidens, and knights. Spell-binding chainmaille art and more.

This is a business that started from my hobby of making chainmail. It provides a great relaxing pass time for me, as well as a way to express my creativity. Since starting as a business I have had to find a way to increase production which has led me to train and hire Aj Litz, which I hope will be just the first of many skilled artisans and craftsmen. As business grows I plan to branch out to new

fields of art, bringing new talents and artist together to help each other get their creations out for people to see and provide creative input for all. Chainmail has a long and interesting history that started much earlier than most people would think. Some of the first pieces of chainmail date to 300 BCE and were found in the graves of Hun and Goth barbarians. It was associated with the Vikings next and was used as full shirts and armor, instead of just small sections like the barbarians had. Because the Vikings were so good at spreading their "culture" most of Europe was using chainmail during the Dark Ages, which is when most people think of chainmail. After plate armor was invented as an improvement over chainmail, and was quickly made useless as well by new weapons, many people had a profession that was no longer needed and found themselves without jobs. This is where I believe chainmail jewelry started to be made more commonly because these people had to make a living with a skill that was not needed. Many of them became more focused on other forms of blacksmithing to keep their jobs, but some would have become artisans for the nobles, and other wealthy people, of the time. Chainmail is still used today for protection in a few industries. Lumberjacks use chainmail leg covers to prevent axe and chainsaw injuries, while commercial meat production facilities use chainmail gloves to prevent hand injuries. While these groups use relatively small amounts of chainmail, ocean divers use full suits when sharks are present. Over the years words change meanings and people start to associate the word with something else entirely. This has happened to chainmail several times. The first time for English was when postal services started delivering mail. When this happened mail armor became chainmail. When chainmail became the annoying emails and text messages that tell you to forward the message or something terrible will happen, some artisans decided to change the word again; this time to a different language where there was already a distinction between armor and letters. The choice was French, and the word became Chainmaille.

While looking up material prices for some up coming projects I got distracted by a terrible, excessive, and awesome idea: Titanium Scalemail vest. it would weigh in at just over 20lb and would only cost $2500 in materials + labor cost!!!! Any takers?
