Carl Smith, owner of Woodland Woodworking, didn’t set out to become full-time a spindle maker.

In 2013, when his wife became interested in hand-spinning yarn, Carl took one look at spindle prices online and thought, “I can do that.” With little more than a mini lathe, a grinder from Harbor Freight, and a 7 x 7 shed, he got to work—despite having almost no prior woodturning experience.

What followed was months of trial and error, long evenings, and more than a few close calls with quitting. But persistence paid off. By the fall of 2013, Carl sold his first spindle on Etsy. Just a few years later, in 2016, he took the leap to run his business full time.
