Orange County & Southeast Asian Archive Center

Orange County & Southeast Asian Archive Center A premier special collection in the UC Irvine Libraries There is a special focus on materials pertaining to Southeast Asians in Orange County and California.

Since the end of the Vietnam Conflict in 1975 a large number of refugees and immigrants from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam have come to the United States, and especially to California. In order to document their experiences in a new culture, the UC Irvine Libraries established the Southeast Asian Archive in 1987. The Archive's collection strengths include materials relating to the resettlement of So

utheast Asian refugees and immigrants in the United States, refugee camp and other experiences of the "boat people" and land refugees, and the development and progress of new ethnic communities. Holdings are in English and in Southeast Asian languages (primarily Vietnamese), and include books, periodicals, refugee orientation materials, government documents, reports and surveys, newspaper clippings, video and audio recordings, personal and institutional papers, posters, photographs, ephemera, paintings, and dissertations and theses.

Visit us at the OC & SEAA to view “Remembering Saigon: Journeys Through and From Guam” on display only until Friday May 30th!

Here’s a look back at the behind the scenes of installing the exhibit alongside past programming and events!

This exhibit highlights the narratives of CHamoru Vietnam War veterans, Vietnamese refugees, and Guamanians who contributed to Operation New Life. It features photographs, historical artifacts, archival documents, and oral histories from the UC Irvine Southeast Asian Archive, the Vietnamese Heritage Museum in Garden Grove, the Micronesia Area Research Center at the University of Guam, the Memoirs Pasifika podcast, the National Archives and Records Administration, and personal collections. We invite participants to consider how war, empire, and humanitarianism facilitated memorable encounters and lasting connections between different communities. These are stories of great upheaval and resiliency, that continue to reverberate in the contemporary moment.
