DERRICK HARRIOTT (1939-2026)
Today, October 24, 2026, Jamaican music has lost one of its most elegant and visionary giants: Derrick Harriott, who passed away at the age of 87.
In the early 60s, the music business in Kingston was ruthless. Singers were routinely exploited by heavy-handed producers like Coxsone Dodd or Duke Reid, receiving mere shillings for recording hits that generated fortunes. But Derrick Harriott, armed with one of the most seductive falsettos on the island, understood that true power lay in owning the master tapes.
Harriott became one of the first Jamaican artists to make the bold leap into independent production, founding his own imprint, Crystal Records. Not only did he gift us definitive and melancholic Rocksteady anthems as a solo singer (with gems like "The Loser" and "Solomon"), but his sharp ear as a producer was responsible for capturing true masterpieces of the era. He was the man behind the mixing desk for the eternal "Stop That Train" by the duo Keith & Tex, and shaped formidable instrumental tracks leading his studio band, The Crystalites.
While many artists of his generation unfortunately ended up broke, Derrick Harriott smartly managed his catalog and opened his own legendary record shop, the Derrick Harriott Music Store in Twin Gates Plaza, managing his own legacy right up to his final days.
Today we bid farewell to a foundational legend who not only sang with his soul, but taught an entire generation that a Jamaican artist could also be the absolute master of his own destiny and his music.
