In 1963, there were two major US mountaineering expeditions. One group of elite climbers was a part of the American Mount Everest Expedition, one group elite climbers headed north to take on Denali’s East Buttress.
Limmer Fest keynote speaker, Jed Williamson was on the Denali expedition with Warren Bleser, Peter Lev, Rod Newcomb, William A. Read, and Fred E. Wright. They weren’t wearing Limmer boots on this expedition, but most of them wore Limmer over the years guiding for and in all sorts of other rugged places around the planet.
Jed sent us his 1963 article about the expedition in the Journal. Incredible all around, and below is an excerpt of his bio at the time…
“JED WILLIAMS0N is at presently serving with the Army at Ford Ord, California. Previously he has taught high school English and been a ski instructor and mountain guide in the Tetons. As well as in the White Mountains and Shawangunk’s, he has climbed in the Tetons and on Devil’s Tower and farther afield in the Selkirks, Bugaboos, and Chugach Mountains near Anchorage, Alaska. His mountaineering clubs include the A.M.C., American Alpine Club, University of New Hampshire Outing Club, and Alaska Alpine Club. He holds the A.M.C.’s certificate as a Grade IV leader.”
At the time of the bio, Jed was only 24! What else has Jed accomplished in the mountaineering world and beyond? An incredible amount a that you will want to learn more about at the office space / Citizens bank tomorrow night!
