When I got home today, this handsome monarch had just emerged from its chrysalis. He flew over and landed on my native sunflower plants (thank you Black Cap Farm Native Plant Nursery!). You can tell it's a male by the 2 spots on its hind wings. The spots are pheromone glands that release scents to attract females during mating. Females do not have these spots.
