Hello social media world! 👋🏻 My name is Emma Bealo and I am the Approval Plan Administrator for Worldwide Books.
Welcome to the first edition of “What’s Emma Looking At?”. I will be periodically posting exhibition catalogues that come across my desk that I think are particularly interesting for one reason or another.
For the inaugural post, I’ve decide to feature “Joshua Johnson: Portraitist of Early American Baltimore”. The exhibition is currently on display at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts until October 24th.
Publisher’s description: Often considered the first professional African-American artist, Johnson was a freed slave who achieved a remarkable degree of success as a portraitist in his lifetime by painting affluent patrons in his native Baltimore. “Joshua Johnson: Portraitist of Early American Baltimore” contextualizes Johnson both historically and culturally, and explores further the key forms of natural symbolism represented in his paintings.
