You Should Listen to CDs

The CD is dead. Long live the CD! I listen to vinyl, CD & streaming almost equally. Vinyl sounds the best, is the coolest, and is a true sentimental favorite. Streaming for me is all about convenience and exploring new music. I don't need to load my phone up with so many albums, plus I stream in HD, so it all sounds good. But if you are into physical media like I am and don't want to explode your budget, CDs are great. They have their own advantages and it's a buyers market now, especially for used discs. Prices have bottomed out and you can get multiple CDs for the same price as a vinyl record. The *MUSIC* has always been the most important thing, so I'll listen to it anyway I can. Some albums just have to be on vinyl, others are totally cool on CD. I respect everybody's preference and stance, but I refuse to be exclusive to one format or another, especially for elitist reasons. It's all about the music.

This article makes some pretty great points. However, I totally disagree with their assessment of vinyl. Your mileage may vary.

If vinyl is for hipsters and streaming is for everyone else, maybe the forgotten format is for you.

Greetings! I will be making my first appearance at a Crossroads Music Show in over 1.5 years on Sunday! My aim is to sell a lot of records and I have lowered prices on about 75% of my stock. Plenty of Rock and a nice selection of Metal, but I will also have a wide variety of other genres: Jazz, R&B, Country & Folk. For those who enjoyed the Ken Burns documentary on Country Music, I'm sure you will find some treats! I'll have some CD and cassettes, plus several boxes of $1 Rock albums. Should be fun!!! This show is located at the Knights of Columbus at 2100 E 71st St, Indianapolis, IN 46220-1308.

Andrew Neil | Singer Songwriter from Charlottesville, VA

My friend Ray has helped produce an album for his son Andrew Neil which has just been released. This is a very special album for many reasons, one of which is the Andrew's condition when he wrote and recorded these songs. At that point, Andrew was a patient in a local mental hospital and these songs reflect his struggle and vision in seeing the world. It is an intense record but also very rewarding and not heavy handed. Andrew's gift with words let his images speak for themselves. Help support Andrew and his music! It also includes some album jacket notes by yours truly! https://www.reverbnation.com/andrewneil

Hello All... I want to tell everybody that our American Beauty location has closed. The folks running that store have decided to pursue other avenues. For the time being, our record racks are going to be retired as we continue to sell the same fine used records and CD's at the Upscale Junk & Antiques location as well as pursuing a much more pronounced presence at local records shows in Indy and surrounding cities. Thanks to Brandy Stinson for our time at American Beauty. It was fun. And who knows? The record racks may reappear sometime somewhere else...

Uncle Rudolf's Record Rack "THROUGH THE YEARS" - The Funkyard Era!!! Our longest, best-est and most successful-est record relationship has been with our dear friends at the Funkyard who close their doors Friday evening. We entered their hallowed hall in August of 2012 and leave their hallowed hall four years later in 2016. Well over 6,500 musical units sold and countless laughs and good times. Here are some of my favorite pics over the years....

Uncle Rudolf's Record Rack "THROUGH THE YEARS" - In January 2012, six months after Square Rootz Deli closed, URRR was back in business at the exact same physical location, 1110 E. Prospect St, but this time it was within Harloh's Vintage, an excellent vintage clothing store run by Tammy Rossman Dyson. We had a great 8 months there before Harloh's sadly closed their doors as well. The next adventure came two doors down the street, but I am getting ahead of myself.

Uncle Rudolf's Record Rack "THROUGH THE YEARS" - Six years ago in August 2010 we branched out to the Square Rootz Deli in the Fountain Square neighborhood of Indianapolis. Thanks to owner Jeff Reuter's for his generous offer to host us in his most excellent dining establishment. I found a couple of great old fashioned records racks and the rest is history. Sadly, Square Rootz closed their doors in June 2011 and we were off on other adventures and locations. Hey Jeff, people still talk about them sandwiches you used to serve there!

Borknagar - Colossus (Lyrics)

Song of the Day - August 1, 2016 - Those who know me well know that I am an old Metalhead at heart. During the 2000's I grooved heavily on a highly evolved form of Progressive Scandinavian Black Metal. This song is another of one of my all-time faves and quite different than yesterday's Gene Clark song! Long live Øystein Garnes Brun and whoever makes up the Borknagar ranks past and future!

Gene Clark - For A Spanish Guitar

Song of the Day - July 31, 2016: "For a Spanish Guitar" by the late great Gene Clark. One of the finest songs ever written, musically and lyrically. A poem set to music, or music set to a poem, whatever came first, the chicken or the egg. Enjoy!

In light of our upcoming move from Funkyard to American Beauty, I would like to take this page in a new direction. Of course, I will continue to post things all about Uncle Rudolf's Record Rack, but I also would like to start using it more as a music blog about this that and the other, music I care about, music I am learning about, music that I respect, music that I don't like, and just about everything else. So sit back for the ride, it will get weird. And if I'm not posting a couple of things a week, get on my ass and make me work for it!
