My mom is my biggest cheerleader, the one I call for anything, a phenomenal cook, a selfless human, one of my best friends, and a breast cancer survivor. October is breast cancer awareness month, and it’s a significant month for so many people and it’s a month that forever changed my life. I’ll never forget the day eight years ago, the moment my sisters and I found out our mom had breast cancer, will forever be etched in my memory. The news that was my worst nightmare quickly became our reality. My mom was brave and quickly took the reins, being an advocate for her body and her health through it all. She made hard decisions, stayed brave through every treatment, surgery, and was still a rock for our family through it all.
I’m writing this to celebrate my mom, her strength, and to honor her fight and to encourage you to become an advocate for your health. I can’t stress this enough, please please please do self examinations, be your own advocate, and get your regularly scheduled exams.
I can’t put into words just how much my mom means to me and how proud I am to be her daughter. I do know this - we got lucky the cancer was found early and was treated quickly and we are lucky everyday because we still have her. But it breaks my heart that not everyone can say the same. For everyone who fights this fight or has a loved one who is, it’s not easy, but there’s nothing quite like the strength of a brave woman 💛
