Raven Ridge Fiber Arts

Raven Ridge Fiber Arts Raven Ridge Fiber Arts - I dye yarn and fiber in colors inspired by Montana landscapes. I work out of my studio west of Missoula, MT.

The cultural and historical role of wool fiber and its creative possibilities fascinate me. In my Montana studio, I replicate the subtle color palettes and textures of pine forest, soaring rocky cliffs and the expanses of the plains in my yarns, spinning fibers and art garments. I revel in taking the slow lane: creating the special colors, spinning a special yarn and creating unique garments that will honor and last for the ages. www.ravenridgefiber.com

A next made of elk hair! See my previous post for a photo of a magpie pulling hair from an elk.

One possible answer to the hair pulling by the magpies that I posted about on Tuesday may be revealed in this picture -- Rickie is holding a bird's nest (that we found on the ground under a tree at Mammoth Hot Springs) made entirely of elk hair! It seems too small to be a magpie nest, but at least it shows that birds appreciate the hair as a material.

Who knew magpies were fiber lovers! This photo is from our past weekend in Yellowstone. We also found a small bird's nest made in part with elk hair.

The elk in Yellowstone are a scruffy bunch right now, losing their winter coats as the weather warms up. Near Mammoth Hot Springs, a couple of elk were helped along by these magpies, who plucked hairs out along the elks' backs. The magpies also appeared to be removing insects or other debris, but I cannot say I saw them eating any. Maybe the magpies just love fiber?

2 weeks ago we were in Yellowstone, and my husband took this photo.

Birds in flight, part 4. On a quick escape to Yellowstone National Park in early April, we were privileged to find an entire flock of Mountain Bluebirds busily hawking insects (midges, I think) off the surface of the snow. They gave me LOTS of chances to get flight pictures. In case you are wondering, the background to this image is just snow -- I did not remove anything nor 'enhance' it in any way. Not all the local bluebirds were busy feeding here -- some had already paired off in the sagebrush and were fly-catching in the higher ground.
