🚨 🐰 Rabbit Hole Warning! ⚠️
While going through a box of old hockey cards, I came across this gem - ‘93 Classic Hockey Draft Barry Richter card. Side Note: One of my favorite types of cards to collect are players in their Badger uniforms 🦡
Anyway, I saw the last name and the school and I thought to myself, “I wonder if that is Pat Richter’s son?” Yup, I was right.
Pat Richter, as any Badger fan will tell you, was the University of Wisconsin Athletic Director for 14 years in the 1990s and early 2000s. He was responsible for hiring legendary head coaches Barry Alvarez, Dick Bennett, and Bo Ryan, who led, respectively, the Badgers’ football and basketball teams into national prominence.
Richter Sr. himself was an elite athlete in football and was drafted 7th overall by Washington, playing eight seasons in the NFL at Tight End and Punter (!) before returning to Madison where he spent a 17-year career at Oscar Mayer prior to taking the Wisconsin AD job.
Barry Richter played five seasons in the NHL as well as several years overseas for various professional teams. Son is a Madison Sports Hall of Famer while Dad is enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.
