This week's participant is York's very own Billy Cole, our York location's area manager for task. Billy was kind enough to take us around the York facility and show us how much hard work goes into shipping our plants. Lets' take a minute to hear what Billy has learned in his three years with Metrolina.

Last week, our merchandising services leaders gathered for their annual national meeting, bringing together team members from across the country to connect, learn and celebrate the people who help us deliver for our retail partners and consumers every day.

We recognized outstanding contributions with special awards and celebrated employees reaching 10-, 15- and 20-year service milestones, including Danny McLemore, who marked an incredible 25 years with our team!

Attendees also collected backpacks and school supplies to help local students start the school year ready to learn.

We’re proud of the people behind our merchandising services organization and the difference they make in stores and communities across the country every day.

This July, our Community Outreach Team partnered with Angels & Sparrows once again to assemble 50 bagged lunches for students across Mecklenburg County. Together, they helped ensure children had access to meals throughout the summer months.

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers for their dedication and for making a positive impact on families in our community.

Special thanks goes to our incredible Community Outreach Team members, Wendy Hernandez, Yomira Martinez, Teja Gollmudi, and our outstanding leader, Shaun Schoonhoven, for their hard work and commitment to serving others.

Great work, team!

Fall is quickly approaching, which means that once again it's time for mums to start shipping! We are sad to see these beauties go but we are so excited to see them bloom in a garden near you. Before we ship our mums out they spend several weeks in a blackout! This is a controlled light schedule that mimics the short days of fall. This helps encourage our mums to develop buds and blooms at just the right time. By managing the daylight exposure, we can ensure they are blooming with color when they arrive to you! Now all that's left to do is grab your pumpkin spice, your sweaters and pick up your mums to welcome in the season!

We just had to run it back this weekend and highlight how amazing our teams were this week! We absolutely loved showcasing the incredible work our teams do and sharing their accomplishments with all of our visitors.

Teamwork is what keeps Metrolina running smoothly, and we couldn't imagine a better group of people working together to make it happen. Thank you to all of our teams for your hard work, dedication, and commitment every day!

This week, we were honored to celebrate and recognize the 17 interns who joined us at our Huntersville location before the back-to-school season begins.

Getting to know our interns, both domestic and international, is one of the most rewarding parts of the internship experience. Each person brings their own unique background, culture, perspective, and talents to Metrolina, helping make our team stronger and enriching our workplace in countless ways.

One of the highlights of the celebration was hearing the interns share their stories and experiences. We loved hearing how close many of our international students became while living together throughout the season. It was a great reminder that while people may come from different countries and speak different languages, a passion for horticulture speaks for itself.

We also appreciated the opportunity for our interns to hear from Metrolina leadership including CEO Abe VanWingerden and COO Art VanWingerden. Their insights, experiences, and words of wisdom provided valuable perspective, and we are fortunate that they took the time to invest in and encourage the next generation of horticulture professionals.

We are grateful that all 17 interns took the leap to join us, whether for the summer or for a full year. Watching them learn, contribute, and grow has been inspiring, and we are proud to have been part of their journey.

As this chapter comes to a close for some of our interns, we can't wait to see where their paths lead next. Thank you for your hard work, enthusiasm, and the impact you've made during your time with us. Whether you transition to a full-time role at Metrolina or pursue your career in the green industry or other fields, we wish you all the best!

The doctor is in! Another successful Annual Wellness Fair has been completed in Huntersville, with another one scheduled in the coming weeks for York. The goal of our Wellness Fairs is to support all of our employees on a whole-person wellness path. These events provide the opportunity for our team members to meet with our benefits partners, local wellness providers and our Human Resources team to learn more about the benefits we offer. As a result, we hope our team members ultimately feel empowered to prioritize their health! Thank you to the Metrolina Greenhouses Wellness Committee for continuing to foster a culture where wellness remains an important part of the employee experience.

The Metrolina Expo was one of our best ever this week. We love getting to showcase all of our amazing teams, and the expo - an internal event that’s like a mini trade show for Metrolina employees- is an amazing way to get us all interacting with each other! This year’s theme was "Growing better, every day." We absolutely love how creative everyone got with their booths! Whether it was creating a game, setting up a mini greenhouse, or other fun activities, we want to thank all of our participating teams and employees for their contributions and dedication to our community and our mission.

This week's participant is Huntersville's own Lead Mechanic, Joe Wood!

Joe was kind enough to give us a behind-the-scenes look at our mechanic shop to show just how important it is to keep Metrolina's fleet of more than 300 trailers running safely and efficiently as they move in and out of our facility every day.

Take a few minutes to hear what Joe's got to say and learn what has made his career at Metrolina so meaningful. His dedication helps keep our operation moving, and we're proud to have him on the team!

Curcuma, also known as Siam Tulip, is a tropical favorite prized for its elegant, tulip-like blooms and lush green foliage that bring a bold, exotic touch to gardens and containers. Blooming throughout the warm summer months, Curcuma adds long-lasting color to partially shaded outdoor spaces, while also making an excellent cut flower for fresh arrangements.

For the best performance, plant Curcuma in partial sun to bright filtered light and rich, well-draining soil. Keep the soil consistently moist during the active growing season, but avoid waterlogged conditions. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring and feed monthly during the growing season to encourage vigorous growth and abundant blooms.

Curcuma is perennial in USDA Zones 8-11 and can be grown as a summer annual or overwintered indoors in cooler climates. Once blooming has finished, allow the foliage to naturally die back as the plant enters dormancy. With minimal maintenance and proper winter care, Curcuma will return each year with vibrant blooms and lush tropical foliage.
