Steam Calliope wagons were not a specific design but a wagon that carried a steam powered calliope musical instrument. This type of instrument forces steam through whistle pipes creating a shrill sound, much the same as a railroad train whistle. The calliopes have a series of pipes in different lengths (think of a pipe organ), usually 32 pipe whistles, which produced different tones and was controlled by a keyboard or a spinning cylinder lick a music box. The Calliope wagons created much of the circus music in the circus parades and under the big top.

Golden Age of Chivalry (903 Barnum & Bailey) or the ‘Dragon Wagon’ was one of the thirteen built for Barnum & Bailey in 1903 by Sebastian. Sometimes before 1910 several vertebrae (about 15″) were removed from the dragons’ necks, a corresponding amount of material was taken out of the tail, and the dihedral angle between the wings was flattened to reduce its height. This may have been done so that it would no longer be necessary to take it apart to cut down on the overall height when it was loaded on the flat cars.
In 1925 the wagon along with other wagons were sold and put into storage. Through various storage moves one of the dragon heads was lost. Finally in the 1960’s the wagon was acquired by the Circus World Museum where it was restored to its former glory.
