🥇A new honor for a hero: The Houston City Council voted today to rename Cesar Chavez Boulevard after Army M/Sgt. Joe E. “Chaco” Ramirez, a Korean War hero and Prisoner of War. The new name will take effect in 30 days.

Ramirez was shot and captured during his war service, spending 3 years in captivity before returning to his family in Houston, where he lived in Magnolia Park.

Richard A. Tapia, a distinguished professor at Rice and a trailblazing mathematician renowned for his dedication to increasing the participation of underrepresented minorities in science and engineering, has passed away at age 88.

“Walking Into History” towers over downtown L.A. on a wall of the Barclay Hotel, which provides affordable housing for formerly homeless and extremely low-income persons.

​Love Elementary has been a cornerstone of our community for an entire century, and it’s finally time to celebrate! We are rolling out the red carpet for current families, former students, retired staff, and all our wonderful neighbors for a day of history and fun.

​When: Saturday, May 16
Time: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Where: Love Elementary School

​Schedule of Events:
​10:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Explore our "Time Tunnels" through the halls, contribute to our community art project in the cafeteria, and grab lunch at the food trucks while enjoying live music on the blacktop.
​1:00 PM: Join us for a final musical performance featuring current students, followed by a Time Capsule Ceremony and cake and punch in the cafeteria.

🥂💐 The forecast is looking good Saturday midday to treat Mom to this lovely annual event along 19th Street in the Heights!
Such a perfect way to spend time and honor her, with a choice of delectable food and unique shopping — and the mimosa sips are free!
We’re not on the street any more, but we’re with everyone in the spirit of honoring “madres” and special ladies in your lives!

📚Sharing a variety of good reading — for both adults and young people — was one of our great pleasures at Casa Ramirez. Much of it came from Arte Público Press at the University of Houston and its children’s/young adult imprint, Piñata Books. We encourage you to follow them for new titles and access to their catalog, as well as book clubs and special events.
