Almost exactly seven years ago, a young lady here in Houston was hit by a drunk driver while riding her bike home from work and left on the side of the road to die. That young woman's name was Chelsea Norman.
I didn't know Chelsea, and she wasn't our customer. Nevertheless, her death impacted me in much the same way that it impacted so many of our fellow cyclists in this city. What happened to her was a major event in our local cycling scene, and her case became a rallying cry for those of us that spend time pedaling our streets. It wasn't even so much that she'd been doing nothing wrong, and been struck by an automobile and killed while legally riding her bike home from work. Sadly, that story has played out so many times here that even the most empathetic among us have become hardened to the reality of cyclist fatalities. What really galvanized our community was the reaction to her death from her killer, Margaret Mayer, and the general public's victim blaming on spaces like the Houston Chronicle's online comments section.
Chelsea was still alive after Margaret hit her with her car. Margaret was blind drunk at the time, which didn't stop her from getting behind the wheel of her car, and after she hit Chelsea she just sped away from the scene of the accident. She would later try to have her car repaired at a body shop before the police could examine it. Chelsea laid there alone in the gutter, her body crushed and bloodied, while she slipped into a coma that she would never recover from. Margaret could have called 911, and maybe the paramedics could have been there in time to save Chelsea, but she didn't. She made the decision to flee, after she'd already made the decision to drive drunk, and in doing so she stole an innocent life not once, but twice. Margaret Mayer is a murderer in my book, and you'll never convince me otherwise.
Margaret was caught, and there was an overwhelming amount of evidence to convict her. Prosecutors chose to charge her with failure to stop and render aid, which carries a similar punishment to manslaughter but is easier to make stick. After just 38 minutes of deliberation, jurors sentenced her to 15 years in a state penitentiary. It's been less than half of that amount of time, and she's now up for parole. Seven years. That's what Chelsea's life was worth if Margaret is freed next month. Seven years. Chelsea would be 31 years old right now, her adult life really just beginning, but Margaret stole that opportunity from her. She stole Chelsea's life from her family and her loved ones, both the ones that she already knew and the ones that she'd have met in the future, maybe even in the next seven years. Margaret has never shown an ounce, not even a trace, of remorse for what she did that evening seven years ago, and the price that she's paid for her actions doesn't even begin to cover the cost of her decisions. It's not right.
Chelsea's father left the following post on the Houston Ghost Bike page, and I asked him if I could share it with you. I'm asking you, right now, in this moment, to leave your comfort zone and bring a little bit of justice back into this world. Please take just a small bit of your precious time and write the parole board and let them know that justice has not been served. Seven years is not the price of Chelsea's life, and Margaret has not paid up. Please, do it for her family, and for our community, and for our own sons and daughters who ride these streets. Please do it for Chelsea.
Thank you,
