Wise words

In 1961, comic book writer Stan Lee was ready to quit.

He was frustrated with the silly stories he had to write and felt his career had stalled.

He told his wife he was done with comics.

Instead of letting him give up, Stan’s wife Joan gave him a challenge.

She said, “If you’re going to quit anyway, why not create one comic the way YOU think it should be done?”

Stan took her advice.

That year he wrote a new kind of superhero story, filled with characters who felt real and human.

He co-created the Fantastic Four, a team of heroes with flaws, fears, and personalities unlike any seen before.

The comic became a surprise hit.

Fans loved it.

Stan didn’t quit after all.

In fact, he went on to create Spider-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men, and countless more characters.

The company that would become Marvel Comics was reborn.

As Stan later said, "If you have an idea that you think is good, don’t let some idiot talk you out of it."

Stan Lee almost walked away right before his biggest successes.

Because he listened to one smart piece of advice and stayed true to his vision, the world got a universe of superheroes.

Sometimes your biggest breakthrough comes right when you’re closest to giving up.
