Cactus Music "Houston's historic record shop" with over 50 years of experience keeping the music alive one album at a time.

"Social scientists speak of "third places," by which they mean informal anchors to community life. These places are neither home's first place nor work's second, but somewhere in the middle....Especially when it hosted in-store concerts, Cactus functioned as a third place for a good portion of Houston's music scene, a convivial meeting spot that was neither home nor a bar. Sure, it wasn't the cheapest place in town to buy CDs, but think about the atmosphere on in-store nights: Where else could you enjoy free music and bevies with dozens of your closest friends?" 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥: Cactus Music store faves Los Hermanos Gutiérrez and their Tour 𝗮𝗿𝗲 rolling up to 713 Music Hall tonight 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟭𝘀𝘁, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, with special guest Y La Bamba. 𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘆’𝗮𝗹𝗹! Tickets are still available, but the last few times they’ve played in Houston, the shows have sold out! So grab your tickets and disconnect for a while.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲‼️‼️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

On their new album, 𝘓𝘰𝘴 𝘖𝘫𝘰𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘊ó𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘳, the Swiss-Ecuadorian brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutiérrez take their sound from desert landscapes to the mountains and coasts of Peru, the home of their great-grandfather.

While Estevan played the entirety of the album on the nylon guitar he was gifted by his father as a child, Alejandro brought in the charango guitar, an instrument native to South America, to conjure sounds like Argentinean Milonga, Cumbia, and more. The layered rhythms and space created are themselves lyrical: Their music never feels absent of a voice, even without a singer.

“We never had the feeling we needed a singer because it was always the intention of let the guitar sing — the melodies — to create the feeling that touches your heart and soul,” Estevan told Rolling Stone in 2022.

𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗥 join us today 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟱𝘁𝗵, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗮𝘁 𝟱:𝟯𝟬 𝗣𝗠 as we host Sama’an Ashrawi for an author event on celebrating the release of his debut book, 𝘉𝘢𝘣𝘢 𝘞𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘙𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦, published via Rough Trade Books.

The event will feature readings from the book, with a discussion moderated by Aris Kian (Houston Poet Laureate, 2023-2025). We hope you can join us for this intimate event. As always, complimentary refreshments courtesy of Saint Arnold Brewing Company.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲‼️

In a debut of wild scope, Sama’an Ashrawi’s 𝘉𝘢𝘣𝘢 𝘞𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘙𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦 tells the stories of his father’s place within the nascent Palestinian rock’n’roll scene of the 60s, as well as the author’s own odyssey through the living history of American music and culture.

Told in the voice of ‘the writer’, who attempts to track down a member of Al-Bara’em (The Blooms in English), the revolutionary family band his father fronted in his native Palestine, now missing somewhere in America, Ashrawi’s tale takes the form of a series of road trips that act as the catalyst for discoveries and recoveries of diasporic family histories and the great traditions of American music.

From the early blues through to New York hip-hop, hardcore punk, indie, classic funk and bleeding into stand-up, visual art, graffiti and fashion——𝘉𝘢𝘣𝘢 𝘞𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘙𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦 joins the infinite dots of American culture in a wholly new, wholly original way, and in apparently effortless, elegant prose, brings us a world of migrant America as influential as it is invisible. This is not just a book for our age, but truly a book for the ages—a book that contains all of Whitman’s American multitudes—and so, of course, it contains the whole world’s.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲‼️‼️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Pain threaded with joy is the sound of survival. On 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘩, Wynonna isn't letting go of either one, carrying everything she's endured and reinventing herself as an artist.

This eleven-track tribute to deep sorrow and dogged persistence strips away layer after layer of the lush production that defined Wynonna's previous recordings, delivering, in its place, her most personal and powerful work yet.

What they've [Cactus Moser and Wynonna] created together is an unvarnished elegy to the dead and the missing, an album that pays tribute to choosing love in the face of suffering. Through instrumentation and arrangements unlike any record in Wynonna's four-decade career, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘩 rolls in like a night train hitting listeners on the blind side.
