‘91 Topps Stadium Club set a new benchmark for premium quality. I loved these cards!

Jeff Bagwell wrapped up a rookie season in Houston where he hit .294 with 15 homers and 82 RBI – a season that would eventually win him the 1991 National League Rookie of the Year Award by a near-unanimous vote.

After his Rookie of the Year season, Bagwell’s power numbers continued to climb before beginning an assault on the record books in 1994. That season, Bagwell hit .368 with 39 homers and 116 RBI in just 110 games in a season that was cut short by a strike, winning the NL Most Valuable Player Award.

Bagwell continued to put up astounding numbers in the next decade, scoring 100-or-more runs in eight of nine years from 1996-2004 and driving in more than 100 runs seven times in that span. He also averaged better than 113 walks a year during those seasons.

From 1996 through 2001, Bagwell totaled at least 30 home runs, 100 runs scored and 100 RBI per season. At the same time, Bagwell turned the Astros into an annual postseason contender – helping Houston advance to the playoffs six times from 1997-2005.

But early in the 2005 season, Bagwell removed himself from the lineup due to a right shoulder that had caused him four years of constant pain. The arthritic condition – produced by bone-on-bone wear and tear – left him virtually unable to throw a baseball.

The final numbers: a .297 batting average and Houston club records of 449 home runs and 1,529 RBI to go with a .408 on-base percentage.

Bagwell was selected to four All-Star Games, finished in the Top 10 in the National League MVP voting six times, won three Silver Slugger Awards and also captured a Gold Glove Award in 1994.

Bagwell was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2017.

1990 Upper Deck Juan Gonzalez
-
Juan was one of the game’s most powerful hitters in the 1990s. I found some of his RC’s in my childhood collection.

Gonzalez exploded in 1992 with a league-leading 43 home runs, followed by another league-leading 46 homers in 1993 with a .632 slugging percentage. That same year he was elected to his first of three All-Star Games (1993, 1998, 2001) and was the Home Run Derby winner (1993). From 1995 to 1998, Gonzalez had 514 RBIs in 511 games, making him the first player since World War II to drive in a run per game for any four-year period.

uring his career, Gonzalez also collected six Silver Slugger Awards (1992-1993, 1996-1998, 2001) and was a two-time American League MVP (1996, 1998). He retired having appeared in 1,689 games with 1,061 runs, 1,936 hits, 434 home runs, 1,404 RBIs, and a .295 batting average.

1990 Leaf Sammy Sosa ⚾️
-
Sammy became the fifth player in Major League history to reach 600 career home runs and is the only player to hit 60 or more home runs in a single season three times, including 66 in 1998. That season, he and Mark McGwire shared the national spotlight as they pursued Roger Maris’ single-season home run record.

If you haven’t already, watch Long Gone Summer, as it documents that season. No critic from me on whether it was good or bad, I did enjoy it a lot, however I do wish it went deeper into PED’s.

The Texas Rangers picked Sosa in 1985 as an amateur free agent. He briefly played with the team in 1989 before being traded to the Chicago White Sox (1989-1991). He gained his greatest celebrity with the Chicago Cubs (1992-2004), becoming the Cubs' first 30-30 player in club history. The right fielder finished his career with brief stints with the Baltimore Orioles (2005) and a return to the Texas Rangers (2007). A seven-time All-Star and six-time Silver Slugger Award winner, Sosa was also the 1998 National League MVP. He ended his career with a .273 batting average, 2,408 hits, 1,667 RBI, and 609 home runs.

1995 Finest Kevin Garnett 🏀

The question is: to peel or not to peel the coating? What do you think?
-
Known for his surly demeanor and intense play, the wide smile of a young Garnett on his Finest rookie card is incredibly misleading. The teenage rookie was the first high school player drafted straight to the NBA since 1975. It would start a trend of high school draftees that would continue until the rules were altered to force high school graduates to wait one year before they could enter the draft.

The Minnesota Timberwolves took Kevin with the fifth overall pick of the 1995 NBA Draft. The 6’11” center and power forward made an immediate impact on the NBA scoring 835 points and collected 501 total rebounds and 131 blocks to earn 1995-96 NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors.

In 2007, the Timberwolves traded Kevin to the Boston Celtics in the largest combination of players for one single player in NBA history.

With Garnett playing alongside All-Star forward Paul Pierce and newly acquired shooting guard Ray Allen, Boston’s “Big Three” led the now-powerhouse Celtics to the NBA Finals Championship over the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. KG and the Celts returned to the NBA Finals once again in 2010, but fell to the Lakers in a seven game rematch. Through the 2014-15 season, Kevin Garnett has scored 25,949 points, and collected 14,512 total rebounds, 5,383 assists, 1,831 steals and 2,027 blocks in 1,424 games.

1994 Topps Jason Kidd 🏀
-
Like Grant Hill, Jason Kidd enjoyed a long NBA career. The two players shared the Rookie of the Year award during their first season and both retired following the 2012-13 season.

Jason Kidd (3/23/1977) was drafted with the 2nd overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks.

Jason Kidd (aka J-Kidd aka Ason Kidd aka The Engine aka The Kidd aka Mr. Triple Double) is a 10 times All-Star, 9-time All-Defensive Team, 6-time All NBA Team, 1994 Rookie of the Year, and won the NBA title 2010… he is one of the games best to say the lease.

Kidd is considered one of the top well-rounded pure point guards of all-time in the NBA and a top floor general.

Kidd is the head coach for the Dallas Mavericks.

1994 Stadium Club Grant Hill 🏀
-
Grant is the son of the NFL’s 1969 Offensive Rookie of the Year, Calvin Hill.

The Detroit Pistons took Grant with the third overall pick of the 1994 NBA Draft. Hill became the first Piston rookie since Isiah Thomas to score 1,000 points and was named the NBA’s co-Rookie of the Year with Dallas Maverick Jason Kidd. Grant also became the first rookie in the NBA, as well as all of the major sports to lead all players in All-Star voting.

From 1995-1999, Grant Hill became the third player in NBA history to lead his team in scoring, rebounds and assists twice (Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor), and he and Chamberlain are the only two to do it three times.

After scoring 9,393 points, 3,417 rebounds and 2,720 assists, Grant joined Larry Bird, Oscar Robertson and LeBron James to amass those numbers. Hill played 18 years in the NBA with the Pistons (1994-2000), the Orlando Magic (2000-2007), the Phoenix Suns (2007-2012) and the Los Angeles Clippers (2012-13) and led the Suns to the Western Conference Finals in 2009-10. Grant struggled through injuries playing forward, but still earned seven NBA All-Star Game selections and was named to the NBA All-NBA First Team once (1997) or Second Team four times (1996, 1998-2000). Retiring after the 2012-13 season, Grant Hill amassed 17,137 points, 6,169 total rebounds, 4,252 assists and 1,248 steals in 1,026 games. Hill averaged 16.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game. Internationally, Grant won gold medals in the 1990 Montevideo FIBA Americas U18 Championship and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2018.

1993 Hoops Chris Webber 🏀
-
Chris Webber is a four-time NBA All-Star, a five-time All-NBA Team member, a former NBA Rookie of the Year, and a former number one overall NBA draftee. At the University of Michigan, he was a member of the unforgettable “Fab Five.”

After being named the top high school player in the country in 1991, Webber joined the University of Michigan Wolverine’s. As part of the ‘Fab Five’, Webber made history as the first player in history to make the NCAA All-Tournament team as both a freshman and sophomore. He was then selected with the No. 1 overall pick of the 1993 NBA Draft after two seasons playing and he would go on to win the 1994 Rookie of the Year award during his first of two season-long stints with Golden State Warriors.

After being traded to the Washington Wizards, Webber started a streak of nine straight seasons averaging 20 or more points per game in 1994-95. This streak traveled to Sacramento, home of the best basketball of Webber’s career. During six-plus seasons with the Kings, Webber averaged 23.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks and grabbed the most rebounds in the NBA during the 1998-99 season. Webber played with Philadelphia, Detroit and Golden State to close out his career, retiring in 2008 with career averages of 20.7 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

Webber ranks third all-time on the Kings’ points-per-game leader-board. When his #4 jersey was retired in 2009, Webber received a two-minute standing ovation.

1979 Venorlandus Muhammad Ali 🥊
-
This is not his rookie or most valuable cards by any means…but it captures the spirit of the legend of boxing. My fave card of the champ, a true man of the people and a magnetic celebrity of sport.
I could not even fit all of the great photos of him, there are just too many.

Muhammad Ali was a heavyweight boxing champion with an impressive 56-win record. He was also known for his brave public stance against the Vietnam War.

Ali was born on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky. His birth name was Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.

At an early age, young Clay showed that he wasn't afraid of any bout — inside or outside of the ring. Growing up in the segregated South, he experienced racial prejudice and discrimination firsthand.

At the age of 12, Clay discovered his talent for boxing through an odd twist of fate. After his bike was stolen, Clay told a police officer, Joe Martin, that he wanted to beat up the thief.

Muhammad Ali was a boxer, philanthropist and social activist who is universally regarded as one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century. Ali became an Olympic gold medalist in 1960 and the world heavyweight boxing champion in 1964.

Following his suspension for refusing military service, Ali reclaimed the heavyweight title two more times during the 1970s, winning famed bouts against Joe Frazier and George Foreman along the way. Diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1984, Ali devoted much of his time to philanthropy, earning the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.

1991 Ringlords Mike Tyson 🥊
-
Not the most valuable, but one of the most attractive. Also in my PC.
-
Nicknamed "Iron Mike" and "Kid Dynamite" in his early career, and later known as "The Baddest Man on the Planet". My fave boxer as a kid and the subject of one of the best video games ever: Mike Tysons Punch-Out!!

What could have been? That's the question raised when talking about Mike Tyson. Tyson's missed opportunities are well known. Nevertheless, for a short time in the 1980s, he captivated fans like no one has before or since.

From 1985 to 1990, Tyson simply owned the sport. Tyson was not only one of the most powerful punches the sport had ever seen, he also was an incredible defender. He typically knocked out his opponents in one or two rounds. During the 1980s, he charged through the Heavyweight division with ease. On February 11, 1990, his career came to an abrupt halt. Fighting in Tokyo, coming in as a 42-1 favorite, Tyson was knocked to the canvas for the first time in his career by Buster Douglas and the rest is history. Tyson fought for another 15 years, but was never able to match the intensity he previously brought to the ring.

1990 Score Supplemental Emmitt Smith 🏈
-
This is the most popular rookie card of football's all-time leading rusher. Emmitt Smith did not posses the flash of Barry Sanders or the grace of Walter Payton, but he did possess grit and consistency. In 1991, Smith would begin a streak of 11 straight seasons with at least 1,000 yards rushing, peaking with 1,773 yards and 25 touchdowns in 1995. Smith's touchdown mark would establish a new single season record that year. Holder of many NFL rushing records, Smith became the first man in NFL history to have five consecutive seasons of 1,400 rushing yards or more (1991-1995) en route to his unthinkable career total of 18,355. In addition, Smith remains the all-time leader in rushing touchdowns with 164. This eight-time Pro Bowl selection and former NFL MVP (1993) was a three-time Super Bowl champion as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. Smith, who performed well in postseason play, holds several key playoff records, including rushing touchdowns and rushing yards. This card, which is susceptible to chipping along the colored borders, was only available through the factory as part of a complete set. The packaging caused many of the Smith rookies to fall short of PSA Mint 9 quality.

1989 Score Troy Aikman 🏈
-
Troy Aikman joined the Cowboys as the first overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft out of UCLA. After guiding the franchise to three Super Bowl titles, Aikman retired holding or tied for 47 club passing records, including career attempts (4,715), completions (2,898), passing yards (32,942), touchdowns (165) and completion percentage (61.5%). At the time, he was the winningest quarterback of any decade, having finished his career with 94 regular season wins in the 90s. Aikman was six-time Pro Bowler and the MVP of Super Bowl XXVII. He was inducted into the Ring of Honor with Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin on Monday Sept. 19, 2005 at halftime of the Cowboys-Redskins game. Aikman was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
