When a theme for a party becomes too much, this in my mind goes back to putting hospitality over entertaining.
Entertaining is about, “Look at me. Look what I did.” Not in negative way, but, “Look at the beautiful decorations I did and the over-the-top, you know, balloon arrangement,” whatever it might be. That is entertaining.
Hospitality is always, “How may I serve you?” What happens is if we always go over the top with our entertaining, with our themes, it becomes too much work, which means we entertain, we actually have people into our home less and less, which goes against what we are trying to achieve with opening our doors and inviting people in.
So I always say minimize the theme. Sure, you wanna have a big Christmas party, go to town on that. That is so fun. I do it all the time. But that cannot be the norm for normal dinner parties throughout the year, or you will never open your door to guests.
