Dear valued community,

After much reflection and care, we have made the difficult decision to close Mala Market’s brick-and-mortar location.

Mala Market was created to uplift local small businesses and foster accessibility within our community, and we are incredibly proud of what this space became. However, as operating costs have continued to rise, we’ve reached a point where maintaining a physical storefront is no longer aligned with sustaining our mission in a responsible, long-term way.

While our retail space is closing, Mala as a non-profit is not ending.

Moving forward, we will shift our focus away from supporting a storefront and toward directly supporting our programs. Mala will continue to seek investors, sponsors, and donors to help us sustain and grow two of our core initiatives: the Youth Entrepreneurship Program and the Grant Program. By doing so, we can continue supporting local business owners in ways that are more sustainable and impactful for the future.

This decision was not made lightly. Letting go of the physical space has been emotional, and for weeks I struggled to accept this reality. But ultimately, this step allows Mala to continue its work—just in a different form. The support may look different without the shop, but our commitment to the community remains unchanged.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Mala Market, walked through our doors, shared our story, and believed in our mission. What we built together was truly special, and this community has been the heart of it all.

This is not goodbye—just a new chapter. You will be hearing from me again as we move toward Mala 2.0. I will never stop advocating for and fighting for our local community and small business network!

With gratitude,
Somya Gupta, Founder & Director 🥰💙

Dear community members,

As expenses increase, our ability to maintain monthly operations is under strain. We’ve stretched every dollar. We’ve poured in personal resources. But to continue providing this vital infrastructure—and to ensure top quality, handmade, and local goods remain accessible to our community—we need your help.

Your support will directly:

1. Keep our storefront open to dozens of local businesses
2. Ensure continued access to handmade small batch products and more for the Houston community
3. Ensure funding for micro-grants awarded to TOP performing local business owners who provide their community with high end products

‼️DONATE NOW USING THE LINK IN OUR BIO‼️🙏🏽

Since opening our doors, Mala Market has been more than a shop—it’s been a launchpad for Houston’s makers, dreamers, and doers: local entrepreneurs crafting handmade goods, building community, and fueling our local economy.

Our non-profit mission is simple: to serve and sustain the local small business community in Houston—especially those specializing in handmade top quality products. We invite these businesses, as well as youth entrepreneurs to reside within Mala Market, while we cover the backend operational costs—everything from commercial leases and payroll to merchant fees, subscriptions, utilities, and point-of-sale systems.

Resident businesses contribute 35% of their sales while benefitting from our 501(c)(3) status and the tax advantages that come with that for registered entities in Texas. Together, we’ve proudly funneled close to💰$2 million💰back into our community—directly through our local entrepreneurs.

But now, we’re at a major crossroads.

Whether it’s $50, $100, $500, or more—your donation helps preserve a model that uplifts economic sustainability, right here in our city. We’ve built something special together. ✨Let’s not lose it now✨

With gratitude,
Somya, Founder + Director of mala market
