Hi everyone! We are going to participate in a BIG SIT on April 22 (Earth Day) at Rice University. The goal is to see or hear as many birds as possible from dawn to dusk. A Big Sit is like a Big Day except that we will be confined to a small area, in this case, the Owl Deck at Rice. On April 22, we will be in the thick of migration. We've occasionally had big flights of songbirds around this time (400 Baltimore Orioles in one hour a couple of times!).

This Big Sit is part of the Houston Audubon Society Birdathon, which is a fundraising effort to support bird conservation and awareness efforts by Houston Audubon.

All are welcome to help out. Come and go whenever you want. There will be a number of seasoned birders there to help you get onto birds if you are a beginner. Land Sea and Sky will also be there to demo binoculars and scopes. The Rice Student Bird Club and Houston Audubon will have representatives there too. Join us for a great day of birding (bring a portable/camp chair if you want to sit). And there will be folks there to give tips on photographing birds.

We will be under the Owl Deck, which is in the field west of Wiess College and south of the Kraft Social Science building. We will hopefully have parking passes for everyone in the adjacent low (see arrow on map in the flyer).

When the days turn colder, birds come closer. In colder months, look out for mixed flocks of t**s and finches moving together. These groups feed cooperatively, alert one another to predators, and create some of the most entertaining winter birdwatching moments.

Here’s who you’re most likely to see: Northern Cardinal, Tufted Titmouse, Downy Woodpecker, Dark-eyed Junco, Black-capped Chickadee

The Urban Bird Walk was a huge success! Thank you .htx for collaborating with us on this event and thank you to everyone who participated. We saw some amazing birds, with the fan favorites being the Red-bellied Woodpecker and the Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Did you know that some birds start nesting even in winter?

The great horned owl is one of the earliest! In the southern US, they nest as early as November, and in the Midwest, they can begin by mid-January.❄️

With an incubation of about a month, their young will fledge just in time for the peak of prey availability. Nature’s timing is truly amazing!

Keep an eye out for these resilient owls this winter! 🌌💚
