Whitetail Deer in Allegany County Tests Positive for Rabies

It's important for hunters to remember that all mammals, including white-tailed deer, are susceptible to rabies. Rabies can cause neurologic symptoms , which can include balance problems, aggressiveness, lack of fear, stumbling/falling, incoordination and a head tilt.

Rabies can be transmitted from animals to people through the animal’s saliva and spinal cord fluid into an open wound. Once clinical signs appear, rabies is nearly 100% fatal.

It is important to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while handling a dead deer. Wear rubber gloves when field dressing or butchering the deer and be sure to discard the gloves in the trash. Use safety glasses or a face shield to avoid splash into your eyes/nose/mouth. Always wash your hands with soap and water when you are finished.

Do not field dress, butcher or consume animals that appear abnormal. To report a deer or any other wild animal that is acting odd or shows signs of a neurologic issue, you may contact your DEC Regional Wildlife Dispatch Office (Region 9) at 1-844-332-3267.

LaRue will be set up at Spring Bottom Farm on Lapp Rd in Fillmore.
We will both have hats, scarves, gloves and mittens, sweaters, dryer balls and everyone's favorites alpaca animals.
