Remember AJ? A couple weeks ago we celebrated New Bike Day with his family and AJ’s new Fairdale Bikes Macaroni. Mom said then she was going to get a bike so she could ride with him, and last week she did, an Electra Townie 7D in Kiwi Green. Is dad feeling the pressure? Yeah he is! Can’t wait to welcome all three of you on a Tuesday night Choo-Choo Ride!

Ian, Aaron, Grant, me (Steve), plus some friends spent our weekend on a shop ride from GoodSpeed to the Dunbar group campsite at Indiana Dunes National Park; Graham drove up with the kids, and Jack drove up while his son Fin, age 9, rode with us on Sunday—54 miles! He’s NINE, people! NINE!

Inspired by the mural at Just Be Coffee Roasters in Munster, we christened the ride Mean Ugly People Overnighter. It’s a GREAT route from our massive Ride with GPS library on our Ride with Us web page—http://goodspeedcycles.com/goto/ridewithus. Route connects you to Just Be, Grindhouse Cafe sammiches in Griffith, Brody’s Candy Corner ice cream in Hobart, Peggy Sue’s Diner in Chesterton; eat your way there and back (we did).

Scary paths of NW Indiana tornados laid bare across the Oak Savannah Trail just outside Hobart and Prairie Duneland Trail outside Chesterton. Enjoy the pics, and tag us on YOUR overnighters. Now…back to work (sigh).

Homewood School District 153’s in-school cycling programs at Willow Elementary and at James Hart middle school give every child in Homewood the opportunity to fall in love with biking…and often a parent discovers they need a bike to keep up. Carlette chose a beautiful Trek FX 2 in Fury Red and a matching Trek Circuit WaveCel helmet so she could join her son on our Saturday morning Off-Leash Rides, beginning her own cycling journey. John obliterated the one-lap speed record of our parking lot before sprinting down Morris when he test rode a Trek Domane AL 4, 61cm in Hex Blue to Marianas Blue Fade; to paraphrase an old cereal commercial, I think he liked it. He’s taking it home to NW Indiana where he has Chicagoland’s best-connected regional bike network out his front door. We’re envious of your new bike AND your bike paths, John! Regular attendance on our Saturday morning Off-Leash Ride, which includes a loop of Homewood’s beautiful Homewood Izaak Walton Preserve and its gravel and dirt trails, convinced Tim that he wanted more unpaved routes in his life than his Fuji road bike could enjoyably accommodate. Fate intervened: we had one more Trek Checkpoint AL 3 Gen 2 on closeout, providentially in Tim’s size. With 40mm gravel tires (and room to go even cushier), the Checkpoint lives for the path less traveled, and is fast and comfy on pavement, too. We have even more capable Checkpoint ALR 3 Gen 3s in stock and (checks inventory…) a Checkpoint ALR 4 Gen 2 on closeout—maybe it’s destined for you? And thanks, Tim, for riding with us and being our customer!

We spent Wednesday evening building a batch of new Fairdale and Sunday bikes—for kids both in body and at heart—and the Fairdale Macaroni 20” didn’t make it past Thursday morning. AJ’s parents fell in love with it on sight, and surprised AJ with it after kindergarten graduation yesterday afternoon. A tiger unicorn? In space? And that green? Plus Fairdale’s rep is built on mad respect from bike park shredders both small and large. Congrats on moving on to the first grade in style, AJ!
