Still a sad state of salmon management. Follow STOP Alaskan Trawler Bycatch and below for the ways to be informed!

Over the last several weeks, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has closed or restricted several rivers to King salmon fishing. This includes Eagle River, Kenai River, Ayakulik River, Karluk River, West Cook Inlet fresh waters, Susitna & Little Susitna River drainages, and areas in the Gulf of Alaska saltwater. These emergency orders say they are "In favor of protecting returning king salmon and ensuring sport fishing opportunities in the future..."

This all comes as the deputy commissioner of Fish & Game sits on the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, which has set the King salmon bycatch caps in the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska at 77,500 individual Chinook.

The Council lets trawlers bycatch and largely discard thousands of King salmon, while in-river management restricts Alaskans from fishing in the name of conservation.

Stand up to this inequity and sign the petition to ban bottom trawling: salmonstate.org/bycatch
