About to plant my fall tomatoes next week. My summer crop is almost dried up.

If you want a fall tomato harvest, now is the time to plant. Gardeners in north Louisiana should aim to get transplants in the ground by mid-August, while those in south Louisiana can plant through early September.

Be prepared to stay on top of watering and pest management because of the heat. Choose heat-tolerant varieties such as Florida 91, Phoenix, Sun Leaper, Solar Set, Sunmaster and Talladega.

Get your zinnia seeds in the ground this week to bring fall colors into the garden. They're a favorite for Louisiana gardeners as they are easy to maintain and love the heat.
