Making a shabby Patch for a Ball Cap
Choose a applique patch design from your embroidery designs (circle, square, etc) I like to use one with a fancy stitch around it.
Choose your design for center of patch.
Hoop cutaway stabilizer
Cut 3 pieces of fabric a little larger than the circle (I use a 4” circle)
1 piece of flannel or felt or another piece of the same fabric.
2 pieces of the fabric you want your patch to be made of
Stitch out your first applique placement stitch.
Lay the first piece of fabric vertical on the top of the hooped stabilizer
Lay the second piece of fabric horizontal on top of the first piece
Lay the third piece of fabric vertical on the top of the second piece
Stitch out your next patch stitch
Stitch out your finish patch stitch
Stitch out your design for the center of the patch.
Remove from hoop
Cut away the stabilizer real close to the stitching (do not cut the fabric at this time)
Cut the three layers of fabric about ½ inch out from stitching all the way around the patch.
Cut little slits into the stitching about ½ inch apart all the way around the patch.
Use large tweezers to pull threads all the way around to make it shabby (some people use a stiff brush to pull the threads but I like the look of the pull from tweezers better.)
Use a waterproof glue to attach patch to hat. (I use liquid stitch, from walmart) (I like to put the hat around a pan or large jar so the front is nice and flat, put the glue on the patch and place patch on hat, then put rubber bands around it to hold nice and tight over night.
Your shabby patch hat is finished.
