Hollywood Beach is now home to a remarkable new underwater destination. On May 22, the City of Hollywood, in partnership with Ocean Rescue Alliance International, deployed the “Guardians of the Reef” artificial reef system just offshore. This innovative project combines art, marine science, and sustainability to enhance marine habitats and promote eco-tourism.

The installation includes over 50 structures, featuring 12 custom-designed sculptures and 38 habitat modules, strategically placed to support marine life and provide a unique experience for divers and snorkelers. This initiative not only contributes to environmental conservation but also aligns with Hollywood’s commitment to sustainable development and community engagement.

The reef modules are 8 to 15 feet deep, and some are sculptures of mermaids, Poseidon, turtles and octopus.

The artificial reef structures in the waters off of Hollywood will be fitted with spots to plug in nursery-grown coral, others will have hiding places for smaller fish. Researchers are hoping for greater biodiversity and eco-tourism.
