“Marking the Moments”, a new body of paintings by LuRu, is based on conversations with a the community about their approach to seasonal change and ritual. These multilayered paintings shift focus as the lighting changes to explore our perceptual relationship with nature and spirituality. You need to come and experience it to get the full effect!

Connecting with the earth is a form of spirituality. As the artist seeks to become more integrated with nature, she finds herself allowing it to take the lead. Thus, her garden is becoming a wild jungle with its own rhythms and demands. “Healing Venom” is a self-portrait. She waters the hibiscus bush with the venom of a snake taking on the personification of an ancient goddess with a magic staff. She
traditionally sees her garden as her own personal world. This painting is an admission of that ego.

Standing in a crane's pose, the figure is half in the natural world and half in the spiritual world. The ouroboros delineates the transition between worlds, while her shadow peers up at her.

"Theia"
Acrylic on Canvas 24" x 36"
This painting is named after our hypothetical twin planet Theia, believed to have struck the earth. The collision would have given us our moon which created tides and our tilt which created our seasons. I have painted Theia as a creation goddess falling to a nascent volcanic earth. This painting is also a reaction to the amazing images coming back from the Bell telescope. As we search for the beginning of creation we are instead faced with the concept and magnitude of infinity.

"Ancestral Waters"
Acrylic on Canvas 20” x 16”
This landscape painting of a waterfall is also a portrait of a Scotch Highland cow. When I was a child we had a herd of them. I was inspired by reading about Celtic shamans donning a bull hide and sleeping beneath a waterfall. This image of a cow’s spirit inhabiting the falls came to mind. It is a dual image that invokes both a
sacred place and a connection to family.

Here is an abstract mishmash of some graffiti tag tiles that I made. The tiles are low relief sculpted, press molded and then polychrome glazed by hand. It was really fun learning how to design in graffiti "wild style" and then sculpting the odd perspective letters in low relief. This is an example of why I like making things for other people. They always push me in directions that I might not go on my own.
