Let us first differentiate the difference between Verbal Commands and Verbal-De-escalation; Verbal De-escalation is the process of attempting to alleviate or diffuse a potentially problematic situation between you and another participant or as a mediator for another situation or occurrence based on your role/objective/ability and capability. Verbal Commands are direct orders based on legalities (rules and regulations of environment and overall territory) as well as personal boundaries based on morality and ethics regarding individual safety and the safety of others (loved ones, bystanders). We can also note the language is different when engaging in verbal de-escalation versus giving Verbal Commands.

The diction used in Verbal De-escalation is Authoritatively based, meaning it is rooted in empathic communication, active listening, persevering autonomy (the ability to make a choice), Respecting boundaries and preserving our own through diplomacy and mediation, while trying to protect parties involved from a problematic situation. Verbal commands are rooted in Effective communication to order, rather than persuade or ask. It disregards empathy and focuses on safety and control for the participants unwillingly involved. Through verbal commands based on effective communication which in laymen’s terms say what you mean and mean what you say by following through based on the subject(s) response/reaction (compliance or non-compliance) while running an active threat assessment we begin to increase our positioning within the Five Stages of Violent Crime.

If we define de-escalation as the ability to implement the most effective skillset based on the situation where one is called to protect and preserve life, the skills Verbal Commands versus Verbal De-escalation paired with Threat Assessment, Detection, and Recognition while maintaining Proxemic Boundaries through feigning compliance (if possible) to increase reaction time for possible Force-on-Force encounters can be beneficial when conflict resolution through negotiation and mediation are compromised due to the subject’s unwilling cooperation based on emotional and physiological escalation based on psychopathology, pre-incident indicators to violence, intent, imminence, and observable and articulable evidence.
